Song Review: Yerin – Bambambam

Yerin - BambambamFor her second mini album, ex-GFriend member Yerin has gone down a trendy synthpop route. Despite being leveraged by every idol act imaginable, this sound still holds appeal to me. Its nostalgic vibe works especially well for soloists, letting classic melodies and chugging beats take center stage.

Unfortunately, Bambambam (밤밤밤) feels like an amateur version of this trend. Yerin’s thin voice isn’t enough to drive the song forward, and the producers don’t opt for much layering to help her out. The instrumental is equally muted, hitting familiar sounds but failing to do anything new with them. The production feels flat in many places, even as the track is meant to reach its climax. It’s a pleasant enough listen, but there are far better K-pop songs in this style.

  1. Her voice is too airy for this song, I agree that some layering would’ve helped a lot. Oftentimes her voice was drowned out by the intrumentals

  2. Have you ever had that moment when you look through your youtube queue and there is the red line showing you listened to this already, but you are thinking wait what I listened to this already and that was only maybe a half hour or hour ago but you do not remember it at all.

Yes, that happened to this song.

Relistening again, its alright. Pleasant, lacks punch.

  3. Finally she gets a comeback, and it’s longer than 2:30!

I think it’d be nice if she committed to singing with her chest for one of these tracks.

If nothing else, looking forward to listening to the mini.

  4. Maybe I’m just crazy, but I think Summer Charm should’ve been the title track instead. It’s more memorable and the bouncy, uplifting vibe to it suits Yerin’s voice more (in my opinion).

  5. i love yerin but i feel like this song doesn’t really suit her vocal color. believer was really the song that fit her tone best, and i wish she can use brighter songs like that as a title track. it really fits her style 😦

for this song, it’s not a bad one but her voice sounds really thin. she’s not a terrible singer, but her voice isn’t that versatile. maybe if the vocal layering wasn’t half-assed, the song would sound better.

  6. I just don’t think makes a convincing soloist. The song would be so much better with a stronger vocalist. Granted in some places it sounds like the mix was making her sound weird in some places. The melody is pretty nice but that’s not enough to make me come back

  7. Yerin going the soloist route is mind boggling to me. I just honestly don’t know how anyone thought it was going to work, especially after Yuju’s own solo debut barely made a peep. It does make me wonder if the girls will consider resurrecting GFriend one day or if they will just throw in the towel early. With the way Viviz, Yerin, and Yuju have been trending in terms of critical success and public recognition, not to mention already spending 7 years as successful idols, I just don’t see any of them making it to the end of another 5 – 7 year contract while being active throughout its entirety.
