Song Review: eite – Independent Woman

eite - Independent WomanI’ll always root for a super-nugu group with an inscrutable name, and eite fits the bill. Debuting today, I know next to nothing about them beyond the fact that they’ve already surpassed expectations with their music. Independent Woman isn’t quite as spectacular as it could be, but it’s stronger than most efforts from their big-budget, a-list competitors.

The overall soundscape is reminiscent of second-gen groups like Kara, pulsing along a robust electro beat that keeps energy high throughout the track. The vocal melodies are more clipped than I would prefer, but when Independent Woman gets going it’s quite addictive. After a choppy start to each chorus, the track segues into a propulsive hook that works well. “It’s a feeling of euphoria” becomes a repeated mantra throughout Independent Woman, and eite would do well to make this their entire mission statement. There’s a massive gap in the market for this exciting sound.

  1. Let’s hear it for the nugu group so under the radar that this didn’t appear on any of my usual go to dailies.

I want to say “eye-tay” which seems close enough to how google translate tells me to pronounce it “ay-ee-tay”. Better than eite rhymes with aight. rhymes with tight. Unless they mean both at the same time, and secretly also an acronym meaning Ensuring Inspiration In Eternity. (… I just made that up, but sounds about right for kpop.)

Except there are seven of them.

Oh right, the song. Lively! Ebullient! Pulsing! Breezy! Rating is a tad high for me – maybe low 8’s. But as a debut, I think it does well enough.

  3. I love how none of them are minors (the youngest was born in 2002 from what I’ve heard?) and it’s definitely a solid debut! I wish they had gone with more energy for the song tho, it feels like they were holding back on that aspect.

  4. It’s been a while since a song hooked me from the first listen. You can definitely see the budgetary restraints but they delivered a great product regardless. Not to be cynical, but I have to prevent myself from getting my hopes up. There’s a good chance with their status that we will see a drastic sound change, a dip in quality, a line up change, or disbandment. I don’t want that at all for them but after years of following kpop, I have to be realistic. I’ve been heartbroken before. Regardless Imma keep singing “OH! It’s on tonight!” For the next few days lol
