Song Review: Jessica Jung – Get It? Got It? Good (ft. Amber Liu)

Jessica - Get It Got It Good (ft. Amber Liu)It feels weird writing a standard “song review” post on the same day as posting my top K-pop songs of the year. Kind of a comedown, honestly! That’s not a dig at Jessica or Amber, who have each been part of my favorite K-pop tracks of all time. It’s kind of interesting seeing a collaboration between two artists who have left SM Entertainment and pursued more global efforts.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a sucker for Jessica’s voice. There’s just so much nostalgia behind it. However, I realize this totally depends on when your K-pop fandom first bloomed. Mine just happened to occur at the height of Girls’ Generation’s power.

Get It? Got It? Good‘s performance makes it notable, even if the song is pretty lightweight. Its subdued production and soft melodies don’t draw much attention to themselves, but the sound is pleasant all the way through. A catchier chorus could’ve elevated its appeal, though there are moments of melodic interest that catch my ear. As with so many songs this year, it’s more vibe than anything. But at least this vibe will get your head nodding.

  1. I feel like this is a safer space than my usual SONE haunts, so I’ve got some thoughts! I’ve liked a lot of Jessica’s previous releases (so sue me!) but I think this and the single right before this one (“Beep Beep”)… feel immature for someone who has been in the game as long as Jessica has. Her sound hasn’t evolved since “Fly” was released after her stint in SNSD.

I liked “Fly” and the “Wonderland” EPs. But the benefit of those being Korean were that I could disconnect her Radio Disney sound from, well, Radio Disney because my brain was hearing a different language. English reveals that her songwriting/lyricists she’s working with are really basic and for me– a native English speaker– the wishy-washy lyrics drag down her work, which is already pretty generic sounding.

When you compare what Jessica is doing now to other soloists from her era of kpop… uncharitably, you could start with Taeyeon who has tackled fairly ambitious genres, but even soloists like Sunmi, IU, Hyuna, etc., have all grown into a more mature sound and have pushed themselves creatively. Comparitively, Jessica’s music falls really flat and underscores how bland her music is.

All that being said, I like this track more than I liked “Beep Beep.” Love the duality of Amber’s voice here especially.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

    • She’s turned into a person trying to please everyone without pleasing anyone. She’s made a few bold choices mostly with her book and those have had more of an impact. Speaking of Disney the idea she refuses to become the insufferable voice of a Disney Princess is a crime.

    • I agree with you as a Jessica stan. But also, the difference between Jessica and all the artists you’ve mentioned is that their music is their primary source of income. I got the impression long ago after Fly that music isn’t a priority for Jessica any more and that unfortunately shows. I think she continues to do mostly for her fans, which is to keep her fanbase content but she also seems to enjoy it on a casual level. You just cannot compare her to someone especially like Taeyeon, who’s entire livelihood is essentially driven by her passion for singing and music. Jessica has always been the Jack of All Trades, Master of None. I know it’s heartbreaking for the fans that love Jessica’s voice, as do I, but it’s best to accept the reality that we will probably never see Jessica grow musically beyond what we’ve already seen.
