Song Review: X:IN – My Idol

XIN - My IdolSometimes you have to wonder how a song even finds its way out of the recording studio. X:IN are not from a big agency, so there probably aren’t a ton of checks and balances when it comes to A&R, but someone still had to give the green light to My Idol. Sure, the song’s intentions are sweet, paying homage to the luminaries who have paved the way for X:IN to release… this. However, some gifts are better left unsent.

My Idol‘s chorus is audacious in its absurdity. The group rattle off a list of their own idols, shouting their names over a gurgling EDM-trap beat and ghastly vocal loop that sound more like emergency sirens than music. It would be sweet if it wasn’t so grating, but the song comes across as the Rebecca Black of K-pop. Maybe it’ll lead to some level of virality that will provide a springboard for future activities?

      • And who knows, March decides to compensate by giving us 9+ rated bangers (and hope April doesn’t pull a February on us or else we might as well be stuck in a cycle for the rest of 2024 unless August breaks it)

        • Well predictions wise in April I’m expecting a clash of titans (my personal) aka Bnd vs Txt vs Riize possibly, didn’t spot more groups for now but I’m expecting a lot, least to say

          • And NewJeans too are possibly coming back by April, so there’s that.
I have huge trust in Riize (maybe cause I love those guys). Hope they come back with a mini album (and it better not contain their previous songs), something like Get a Guitar or I’d kill to see them with a song with Shinee’s Heart Attack (and hope Seunghan comes back as well)

      • Now we need our beloved Eternity (or Iitnerniti) girls to pull a I’m Real 2.0 and bring the month’s average to 6s 😻

(though X:IN are coming back on the 25th so if they bless us with a worse version of Synchronize or maybe a My Idol 2.0👀)

  1. HAHAHAHA, ANOTHER SONG RATED 2? But well, it’s deserved, cause what the hell was THAT? 😭

When I first listened to the “Blackpink in your area” line in the first chorus, I was thinking “huh? Did I heard that right?” before replaying it twice and realising by the end of the first chorus that this song is a cringefest of all sorts. 🥲

Could have been better had they mentioned groups in their verses, without going overboard, or just given it to Norazo or smth.

I was giving it a generous 5.5 (5,6,6,5), but thinking about it, the 2.75 is deserved.

Now, I’m betting it. We are sooner or later, maybe this year or 2025, getting a song rated in the 1s (ayo Eternity, get your AI-generated-voice-of-a-preteen-with-their-nose-blocked vocals ready)

  2. it definitely feels like either a companies attempt at a viral moment or just some kids from a small company who are trying to do something cute

like, its bad, but its cute

    • I was thinking about the same. Cute, trying something new, did not quite succeed at it, not horrible but not great.

Though for me, the beat sounds lifted from Rocket Punch “Juice” which is one of my all time guilty pleasures, so this song loses points for that.

  3. i am so sorry, but the first thing i thought of was those like 11 year olds who just got into kpop, filming on an iphone 4 and making their own music videos on youtube. this is certainly something else… i honestly think the repeated “respect! respect!” was what made me cringe the most. solid 2 from me.

  4. This is my 7th year as a kpop fan and I can confidently say this is the most abhorrent and ridiculous piece of music I’ve seen from this industry (Besides Eternity)

  5. I see what they wanted to do with this song but the execution was so poor + with the way k-pop companies operate, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a publicity stunt. 😭

By the way, this might be the opposite of an epic day in k-pop…
