Song Review: Rescene – Yoyo

Rescene - YoyoGirl group Rescene will make their debut late next month, but before that they’ve pre-released Yoyo alongside a shortened music video. The song positions them in the space formerly occupied by acts like GWSN and LOONA — a little quirky and ethereal with nuanced production that often shifts tone and rhythm.

Those who are missing those two groups may find plenty to love here. Yoyo certainly establishes an atmosphere. Its sense of texture is palpable, unveiling a sensory feast with various synth tones. I crave a more potent energy driving these textures, as the song slows too many times for my taste. It’s also missing the knockout melodies that would keep me coming back for more. The chorus is mildly catchy, but too flat to really draw me in. As it stands, I’m more enthralled with the style than the track itself, but this leaves plenty of room for Rescene to grow into material that fully harnesses their potential.

  1. The song has its charms. Catchy, but it leaned back instead of leaning into the chorus.

Also, have to mention that its another group debuting with under-aged members. Five girls ages 15 15 16 19 and 19. Cmon, people, this is not OK.

    • Le Sserafim must drive you nuts too, understandably.

It occurred to me much later than the review posting that the newish boy band “Plave” might be “Brave” in the korean letters, but it isn’t. More like Pil-lay-ee-bee 플레이브 Or maybe it still is “Brave”, just not really.

  2. 2018 will always be one of my favorite years for music in K-pop, so since this song is giving very much 2018, I really like it and would personally give it at least a 8. I’m looking forward to their debut.

Also, fun fact no one asked for: their youngest member, Zena, is the girl behind Zena from MAVE. Not sure if she provides the voice for her, but her stage name is the same as hers, so I’m just gonna assume she does. Just felt like putting that out there lmao

  3. I think this was decent choice for a pre release. They establish both their visual and sonic style and they can very easily outdo it with their debut. Granted, they could just have a really strong pre release along with a strong title track, but maybe they want all the attention on the title track

  4. I didn’t understand why they made the MV short and the Performance long. Any chance of a full MV? I would love.
