Song Review: Candy Shop – Good Girl

Candy Shop - Good GirlOf all the new girl groups debuting this week, I was most looking forward to Candy Shop. This is more to do with the song production of K-pop legend Brave Brothers than anything else. Candy Shop is his agency’s first new girl group after Brave Girls (now BB Girls) departed last year. The only thing giving me pause is the fact that Brave Brothers often gives his best material away to other agencies (exhibit A: TRENDZ’s excellent Go Up!).

Brave Sound songs tend to exist in one of two realms. We have the upbeat party starters (my favorites!) and the more subdued slow burns. The latter can also be super effective, resulting in tracks as addictive as Brave Girls’ Deepened. Candy Shop’s debut Good Girl seems to fit within this same musical approach, but skimps on the hooks necessary to make it work.

Ugh! What a disappointment this is. Good Girl didn’t need to be an upbeat banger, but it did need to have some personality that establishes Candy Shop right off the bat. Instead, its instrumental and repetitive melody feel like lesser versions of stronger songs. From the echoey tropical house synths to the sing-talk verses, Brave Brothers retreads familiar territory but tries to force it into current girl group trends. This ends up forging a song that doesn’t go anywhere. The “good girl” hook isn’t very memorable and the leaden energy doesn’t help uplift the performance. I still think this group can be amazing, but Good Girl is a debut better left on the shelf.

  1. Aww I’m kinda sad you didn’t like this😔 I think it’s super cute and full of energy maybe that’s because I’m like a bit younger than the girls and their music is aimed towards gen z but I enjoy it’s sugary sweet tropical beats❤️😍

  2. It’s fine, I could see myself listening to it, but it doesn’t show what their perspective is. I’ll keep an eye out for them as long my Brave brothers excitement lasts or until they release something great

  3. Would’ve benefitted from a longer bridge, I think. The key change came across as super jarring to me, and I think a full bridge would have helped ease that transition. I liked the energy shift at the end and think they could have played with that a bit longer as well. It kind of felt like they were trying to cram it all in to get it under the 3 minute mark.

  4. Yeah I really like this type of beat lol sadly I think reviews are mostly going to keep coming like this. We’re only getting older and well, our Kpop jams just don’t have that poppy and bright vibe we crave for anymore.

  5. I think both this one and the one by UNIS “Superwoman” have been massively influenced by Le Sserafim successful trend of slow monotone jams. To be fair to them most US R&B including afrobeat is a bit like this. I kind of like it, but it depends from song to song.

  6. We have Babymonster imitating Blackpink and Candy Shop coming after Brave Girls; the first angers me, the second I greatly enjoy.

I wish the BB Girls the best although it’s weird to think they are competing with Candy Shop to have that same sound. Which I personally love. And I believe there’s room for both of them to thrive.

I’d give this song as 7/10 because the ending key change doesn’t quite land as it’s a bit repetitive and doesn’t evolve the sound enough. However, the rest of the EP is great, especially No Fake and Candy#.
