Song Review: UNIS – Superwoman

UNIS-Superwoman“New K-Pop Girl Group Week” rolls on with the debut of UNIS. They were formed through SBS reality show Universe Ticket and include members of Cignature and PRIKIL (a J-pop group). They’re a “project group,” which presumably means they’ll only promote for a limited time. That makes the quality of their music all the more important.

Superwoman gets UNIS off to an underwhelming start. It’s fine the way most current girl group music is “fine” these days, but fails to rise above a hushed energy. It actually reminds me of IZ*ONE’s 2018 debut if that song had been drained of all its intensity. Superwoman is far too monotone throughout, and when it does switch gears it only grows more languid for a brief second verse rap break.

The song’s strongest element is its Afrobeats-inspired percussion, but this loop isn’t unique enough to carry Superwoman for three whole minutes. The track calls out for more melodic range — a compelling counterpoint that might inject a moment of interest. As it stands, the girls deliver K-pop’s latest iteration of pleasant, vibes-focused fluff. It may grow addictive through sheer repetition, but that approach is growing blander by the day.

  1. Agree with the range, what annoys me more is they have 2 amazing power belters( Elisia and Seowon) in the group, and 3 decent vocalists (Yunha, Yoona and Ghelee) but did not utilize those resources well, esp the 2 belters. In fact Elisia ridiculously under utilized the whole mini albim like they don’t know what to do with power vocals and just kept all the songs mid range. 😐

  2. This is a mid song. It has safe written all over it. But why would they do this song when they have girls that can deliver as seen in the show. Everything that lead up to this debut felt so anticlimactic.

  3. I guess we technically still have to wait for Babymonster on Monday for ‘new kpop girl group week’ to be over (if you can even consider them to be new or if you even consider their next drop to be their debut…) but I am still preliminarily saying that for this blog, at least, Rescene is the winner of it.

  4. Dopamine was the only song with TT energy, and the album’s best.

agree with everyone else, they have amazing singers, and are doing nothing with them.

Illit had best mini, but NMixx had best gg material so far this year.

  5. i didn’t think it was awful. it reminded me of roller coaster by nmixx and mr vampire by itzy. they have room for improvement. i will say, i watched the show, and most of the members (in my opinion) were picked for appeal, not necessarily trained, true talent. however, they are improving! they also seem to not be fully aware of what every member can really do.

    7.75/10 for me!
