Song Review: EVNNE – Badder Love

EVNNE - Badder LoveThe title “Badder Love” is grating on every grammar nerve I have. “Worse Love” would have sounded equally awkward, but there’s something about that “badder” that just slaps me across the face. However, this is the group who’s already promoted with “Trouble” and “Ugly,” so I guess we’ve been warned. Whatever the case, Badder (ugh) Love sees a shift in sound for EVNNE. Now that we’ve entered the summer season, it’s time for K-pop groups to brighten their concepts, up the tempo and deliver easygoing vibes.

In this case, Badder Love becomes EVNNE’s most melodic title track yet. Over a driving pop beat, the track delivers a sentimental series of hooks performed with anthemic heft. Bright synth runs underneath, giving the song a somewhat dreamy texture. It’s a youthful sound that feels ripped from the soundtrack of a coming-of-age drama. I tend to enjoy this style, especially as it gives the guys opportunity to showcase vocals over general badassery.

While Badder Love is satisfying all the way through and sure to enjoy great longevity, it suffers from its lack of a unique calling card. It’s more generic than specific, both in sound and execution. This guarantees a certain level of malleability but also paints with a broad brush that makes the music feel less vital. This is a minor complaint, but elements like this are what prevent a good song from becoming an all-time great.

  1. I really like this! It reminds me of hey hey! by TWS but with actual moments to breathe, especially in the chorus. The rappers don’t have much to do here but Seungeon’s voice really gets to shine. I’m also glad that they chose to pivot from their club banger title tracks to something more casual listener friendly.

  2. This didn’t beat trouble for me but I like the change up. Agree that it’s generic but is good generic so lol

  3. It’s a bit generic, but decent. I worried the video would use the same boys frolicking cliches as everyone else, but it’s edited beautifully. Lovely to watch. I like XO best as a b-side.

  4. Honestly, I never thought the Boys Planet guys had much in them, but ZB1’s offerings this year (Sweat and Feel the Pop) have been very satisfying. Evnne’s Trouble was fun and this one is really enjoyable. Seungeon was my guy when I watched that show and I’m so happy they are getting decent music/comebacks. This song is an 8.25
