Song Review: GreatGuys – I Love You

Great Guys - I Love YouGreatGuys is one of those acts that consistently releases solid material, even if they never receive the attention that material deserves. They rarely appear in my year-end countdowns or “top three of the month” rankings, but I’m always pleasantly surprised by their output.

I wanted to quickly touch on new single I Love You (각이야) because… yes…. it’s another pleasant surprise! The group is now down to a trio and the music video budget is clearly stretched as far as it can, but the song’s melodies are solid and stuck in my head after just one listen. Ignore the silly opening and dive right into the charming chorus. There’s a trot-like energy to the track but without the more polarizing aspects of that genre. Instead, I Love You unveils a funky rhythm and nonstop barrage of melodic treats. When I criticize “flat” melodies, songs like this offer a counterpoint. I Love You‘s structure bounces here and there, embracing sudden spikes in falsetto and surges of unexpected power. It’s a ton of cheesy fun but also a well-constructed piece of pop music.

  1. A trio now. They used to have a full brady bunch of other great guys. Listening to this song, they clearly still have the performers in those remaining three.

The speed is so spritely, I had to look to see if I had 1.25x clicked on. I did not. It is this speed naturally, which is to say, Great! Guys!

The song itself is trot-adjacent, and I think pretty good. Let’s see if the trot crowd pick up on it. I hope so.
