Song Review: TXT – We’ll Never Change

TXT - We'll Never ChangeSomebody needs to explain why TXT are hanging around in the snow for the promo images of their Japanese single album Chikai, which is set for release in the month of… July. If nothing else, I guess it’s interesting counter-programming? The same could be said for We’ll Never Change, which adopts a more subdued sound than you’d expect for the summer months.

Unlike the K-pop market, it’s pretty common for ballads and slower material to be promoted in Japan. Many HYBE artists have targeted this niche with their Japanese singles, but most of these songs miss the mark. Specifically, they miss the sprawling melodic structure that often comes along with popular Japanese ballads. We’ll Never Change could be an affecting, multifaceted track that takes advantage of TXT’s unique vocal tones and the rock ambitions found within many of their songs. Instead, the song pulls back at every turn. From melody to arrangement, it fails to find its own standing and settles for pleasant and ephemeral.

TXT have proven themselves masters at sentimental, ballad-like set pieces. I’m thinking (obviously) of 2021’s much-lauded 0X1=LOVESONG, but I’m also reminded of 2019’s Nap Of A Star — a gentle wisp of a track that proves how compelling “subdued” can be. For me, We’ll Never Change hits neither of these marks, relegating it to the mushy middle.

  1. Behind this song is an incredible song. Idk what it is with Slow Rabbit, but he seems to miss a big part of the production each time for the last 2 years. I seriously dont understand what has happened here but just looking back at txt’s discography, slow rabbit always cooked with the production. Im so lost as to what has changed now.

Anyways, the lyrics are really nice and someone pointed out that the chorus sounds oddly familiar to Runaway’s chorus when you speed it up!! I like the melodies a lot but the track feels so tame. Compared to Ring at least.

    • Just gave it a quick listen. I can’t help but think this group’s potential is being wasted. I want to hear more songs in the vein of Raging Bull (or at least, the good parts of Raging Bull 😅)

    • I’m pretty sure I like this song more than I should because it’s Winter here and everything I hear is so upbeat. This song is comforting to me even if TxT have done better.

  2. Mmhhh gosh I was expecting so much more considering the list of writers…so many writers, but also big writers I have seen working with BTS on amazing songs I love a lot. I don’t understand this at all, maybe they totally overthought this one, considering how many writers are involved? How is it possible to put out a ballad that is so flat track wise…I think the melodies are not incredible but they’re better than the production; I agree with the people here, I’m not sure what’s happening at HYBE but their top producers aren’t delivering – it’s a very disappointed 5/10 to me 😦

  3. The construction is also very basic…there’s not even a bridge… But their vocals sound amazing and the track is definitely giving BTS ballad vibes
