Thus far, XG have presented several distinct styles. Most prominent is their mix of hard-hitting hip-hop and R&B flourishes, which has already won them many devoted fans. But every once and awhile, the group shifts things over to the dancefloor. New single Something Ain’t Right is the most full-throated move in this direction yet.
Taking its cues from 90’s and early-2000’s dance sounds, Something Ain’t Right finds a catchy hook and sticks with it. It’s a brisk three minutes, feeling short in a good way rather than the “oh crap, this song is actually just two minutes long” realization we’ve grown more accustomed to. That’s thanks to its streamlined approach, building itself around an instantly-addictive chorus and riffing off that refrain with a series of taut verses.
Something Ain’t Right‘s deep house throb isn’t new, but the production has a timeless appeal that seeks to support the song rather than steal attention on its own. In many ways, the track feels like a DJ collaboration, laser-focused on its thumping groove and club appeal. At times, this threatens to make it feel a bit generic, but XG’s natural charisma ultimately wins the day.

This is probably their strongest dance track, which is probably not a big deal because their discography is not very long yet. I loved their vocal performances and missed a little bit more Hinata in the song (I noticed Cocona and Jurin, who usually get rap lines, shone real bright in the song though).
Love theeem, queeeens, slay. Snatched my wig.

It’s fun and it’s for sure catchy, but at times it felt too repetitive and somewhat monotonous for me. I know technically that’s a feature of house-adjacent styles, but I wish they would switch something up every chorus (maybe some unique adlibs, a different tone, or a slight instrumental flourish). Like in SHINee’s View, the chorus though the same, felt a bit different each time with different delivery and textures added by adlibs.

Impossible’s quirky little cousin right there, but lacks the oomph Impossible had (maybe cause both songs take inspiration from the house genre and have that club-appeal). But well, I like it.
8.25 (8, 8, 9, 8) for me.

this is their strongest dance track so far imo. they always sell the performance whatever the genre.
one thing I’ve noticed about them is that they don’t follow current industry trends, despite being a newer group. no obvious, made-for-TikTok songs and most of their (albeit small) discography pass the 3-minute mark.

This is closer to an 8 for me. The track for me is generic but enjoyable. XG definitely have charisma but I get that not from their vocals but their physical performance. That said, I can easily see this becoming annoying with a less capable group of performers. All in all, a good effort, I’m just waiting for them to win me over
also love the styling in their recent videos

I wouldn’t skip it but I won’t go out of my way for it either. I really like their striking, quirky visual style though! Very unique, love to see something daring and different.
