Fresh off the success of her recent single Rockstar, BLACKPINK’s Lisa is back with a big-name collaborator in tow. Spanish singer Rosalía makes for a compelling feature, herself a genre-bending, forward thinking popstar who can certainly match Lisa’s charisma. And as a song, New Woman is infinitely more interesting than its predecessor. However, “interesting” doesn’t always mean “satisfying,” and in this case the track is as frustrating as it is engaging.
There’s a lot going on here, as New Woman carves itself into distinct, warring segments. Rosalía’s second verse switch-up is too jarring to work in the context of everything else around it and overall the track has a difficult time making the most of its various elements. Up through its first chorus, New Woman bops along an airy, artful groove, striking a nice balance between NewJeans-esque aloofness and trickier textures that feel more experimental. Shockingly, the track takes a full minute to reach its chorus, which is like the length of five TikTok videos. It’s a refreshingly old-school approach coupled with a new-school vision.
But like I mentioned, New Woman becomes more challenging as it moves on. Following the tacked-on Rosalía verse, the track rights itself but forgets to bring added firepower to make its second half stand apart from its first. Without any real climax or resolution, it feels like we’re spinning our wheels. Even at three minutes, New Woman sounds incomplete. But paired with an evocative music video and fueled by the power of two superstars, the song will definitely attract attention.

I…loved this. The Rosalia Spanish second chorus took me even more off guard. I love how off-kilter it is. I could see some room for improvement, but I feel like this is THE star power I was missing from a BP solo. Even more than Rockstar. A promising step in the future to me. Also from your review I was expecting lower than a 8.

one thing i’ve noticed from lisa’s recent releases is just how held back she was (all of them, honestly) by yg. this is sonically more interesting than most songs blackpink has ever released. so much of her aura and star power is finally fulfilled with this song and the one she released prior. i enjoy this and im excited for what’s next for her!

i really don’t want to like Lisa, but the music definitely shows promise. I’ve heard of rosalia but haven’t heard even a second of her music. She seems like an ending performer but I hope her music is better than her verse segment of the song.

I find it okay, better than Rockstar for sure. I wish the transition to Rosalia’s verse was much smoother. Also, the way they sing “new woman~” reminds me of Charli XCX for some reason.
I think I’d give it a flat 8 as well.

i…am i the only one who was just completely phased by rosalias introduction into the song? That just ruined it for me completely. I LOVED the chorus, especially rosalia’s spanish version and the verses. I like the song a lot but what is up with that sudden complete demolishment in the middle of it. Idk if the song could even grow on me cause that slowed down part is just so MEH.

would also like to mention that I was happy the song was 3 minutes until i actually heard it. Yeah they just take way too much time to get to the hooks of the song and by then, its over. Definetly could have used an entire extra minute.

it just needed a good transition, i liked the idea of a beat switch bc rosalía isn’t new to that (her songs diablo, sakura & CUUuuuuute for example) but it was just too abrupt, a cute lil interlude would’ve been nice

sameee!!! I had the exact same thoughts. After listening to it a couple times, the change of beat into Rosalia’s verse doesn’t seem that jarring (it still is, i just got used to it), but the transition out of her verse and into the chorus needs a MUCH smoother transition. 😥

I knew it was a Max Martin production lmao, the second verse was giving Lana’s bridge in Don’t Call Me Angel down. it’s still too short but this is by far her best single.

Wasn’t a fan of much of Blackpink’s previous works (much less Lisa and the mess that was Rockstar) but this is… phenomenal. I hope she continues going this direction because this is an insanely good song.

I think its pretty good! It works on a few levels – the chorus would slot nicely into DJ mixes. The refrain “I’m a new woman” could be easily lifted for short advertisements. I like the Rosalia changeup.
Its not a revolutionary song, but what it does, it does it well enough.

Huge improvement for Lisa. I’ve always liked her delivery, but she received some of the cringiest lines in the YG arsenal, and her solo work seemed to be carrying the BP braggadocios baton. This does self-empowerment so much better, and it doesn’t feel like empty bragging. The song feels full and lush and interesting, and I’d love to see lean more in this direction in the future.

I liked it a lot. I’ve always been a big fan of Lisa and Blackpink and I think she is going to be one of the best pop stars out there. I liked Rock star but I think “New Woman” is better and more refreshing. Overall, both of them are better than the solo projects she worked on with yg. I am glad to see what she come up with next. I am also excited for the other members and their comeback in 2025.
