Song Review: Loossemble – TTYL

Loossemble - TTYLLoossemble have carved out a niche for themselves within the extended post-LOONA universe. Thus far, their music has delivered a blend of slick and trendy, never reinventing the wheel but always making it stylish and cool. New single TTYL fits very strongly as part of this year’s sonic landscape. To me, it sounds like an ILLIT or NewJeans track given an extra kick of percussive energy.

That energy is TTYL‘s greatest strength, keeping the track frenzied and brisk even as its melodies embrace the disconnected flatness that seems so popular at the moment. The percussion is a mix of many different styles, taking cues from genres as diverse as afrobeats, lounge and electropop. It’s a heady brew that comes across as a muted carnival — exciting but smoothed of its edges. This production also carries a strong throwback appeal, drawing upon dance music elements from the early 2000’s.

TTYL‘s melodies don’t thrill me quite as much. The chorus is very strong and delivers more range than the verses. Heavy vocal effects also work much better during this hook. There’s a ton of post-production happening throughout TTYL and often gives the song a hazy otherworldliness that disconnects me from the performance. But overall, this is easily Loossemble’s strongest release yet and points toward a great direction for the group.

  1. I need a version without the voice effects, I don’t like that at all, never did. the rest I’m ok with, much better than their previous release

  2. Definitely their strongest title yet!! It’s been on and off repeat since it dropped this morning. The mini is really solid too – thank you for not being ‘end on a ballad’ girls Loossemble! – and I’m happy with not just the line distribution but that Vivi got so much focus. In the first verse ALONE she’s given more lines than her entire tenure in OT12 title tracks combined and in general I have enjoyed that Loossemble has been able to highlight these members that often got lost in the shuffle of OT12.

  3. i love this comeback: the song, the video, their visuals, their vocals, the production, and the fact that they seem to be happy….so very glad they are away from their previous management agency, because they seem to be thriving now….and damn, my ViVi is sounding and looking exceptionally good!….nice job, Loossemble!….keep fighting!
