Song Review: Nam Woohyun (Infinite) – Boyfriend

Nam Woohyun - BoyfriendNam Woohyun has always been generous to fans, frequently releasing special one-off singles to mark occasions or simply show gratitude to those who follow him. He’s also a composer, with some of his best solo work being co-written by him. And then, of course, there’s that voice. I could listen to that voice sing anything.

New single Boyfriend (너의 남자) takes a rock influence, similar to past efforts like Everyday. In comparison, this is a much lighter version of the genre, placing optimistic melodies over a sprightly band sound. It’s a fun toe-tapper, though the song feels pretty inessential to Woohyun’s overall output. Its major selling point — as is often the case with him — is sentiment. His passion comes out in the vocals and sells Boyfriend‘s generic OST vibes. With that said, this is little more than a pleasant footnote in Infinite’s extended discography — hopefully something to tide us over until the group returns with more ambitious material.

  1. Its very OST. Very Gaho “Start Over” (copied at bottom). That song was on the charts for like a whole year or something. To be fair, a song like that builds and maintains careers in the Korean music industry. Crush “Beautiful”. Ailee “I will go to you like the first snow” was covered by everyone for several years running.

That said, if I had to pick an Infinite OST song of the year, it is “Beautiful” by BOTH Kim Sung Kyu + Nam Woo Hyun (below). Yasssss a two-fer of my favorite singers. Its has such a similar vibe to the reviewed song, but has gorgeous sung duets and an Infinite-style synth propulsion laced through it. Yassssss.
