K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Compass

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Compass (from LOL – 2016)

LOL was a great debut album and holds up very well – especially within its sugary pop genre. Compass is pure sweetness, underlined by a propulsive beat that builds to an astounding chorus. The synth percussion has such full texture, perfectly supporting the optimistic melodies that drive the hook. I also love the vocal harmonies that pepper the pre-chorus. They inject a shot of drama into a segment that can sometimes feel overly predictable. This song is such a joy bomb, overshadowed only by some of the bigger moments on the album.

  2. I think this is fan favorite, but I’ve never really gotten it. I tend to skip it when it comes on in the car.

(For context, I have just about every GFRIEND song on my MP3 player– they make up about a sixth of my library)

Anyway, I think there are far better songs on the album, but let’s be real: GFRIEND has about 3 actually bad songs (*cough* Fever *cough*), so even if it’s not my cup of tea, it’s still solid.

Also it’s interesting– we always think about Umji never getting any lines, but she consistently got the killing part in their music.
