Fallin’ Light (from Fallin’ Light – 2019)

What I said then: “Much of it plays like the quintessential GFriend song, but even when the beat kicks in for the chorus, it just doesn’t hit the highs I know they’re capable of. Apart from Yuju, the members have relatively light timbres to their voices, causing already airy material to feel even more intangible.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: Title tracks always catch my attention, and I don’t mean “title tracks” in the K-pop sense, but the actual tracks that an album is named after. It seems like they should be extra special in some way. I don’t think Fallin’ Light is among GFriend’s best, but it certainly feels like a statement of intent. I was a little harsh on this when it was released. The verses could still use an extra kick, but the chorus is quite good. Its rating should definitely be bumped up a few notches.

  1. It’s funny to see past you to call this airy and intangible considering how much more airy and intangible things have gotten. There are actual high notes here! There’s a bridge! The instruments are doing their thing!

  2. I think this is some of their finer work, to be honest, especially if you’re only looking at their Japanese output. It grew on me pretty hard.

The verses are a little slow, but chorus and the instrumentals are great. Also, they do a good job of handing each line off to the next girl, and Umji’s airy voice gets utilized very intelligently here. All in all, a great GFRIEND song
