K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Flower

K-Pop A-Z - GFriendOne song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Flower (from Fallin’ Light – 2019)

What I said then: “As with many J-pop tracks, Flower’s melody is pretty long-winded, taking several different refrains and melding them into one intricate chorus. Because of this, the song lacks the direct and immediate impact of the group’s best work. But, its complexity also rewards repeated listens. It’s like an endless buffet of melody lines – none of which hit quite as strongly as I would have liked.” (read full review)

Updated thoughts: I’m still not sure that the “brassy salsa rhythm” (as I described it back then) is the best match for GFriend and there’s definitely something missing from this single to make it truly spark, but there’s also enough musical drama stuffed within the arrangement to keep interest high. My favorite section comes during the second part of the chorus (post-chorus?), which breezes by with an ease that counters the complex instrumental. My rating stays the same for this one.

  1. This song’s really hits my sonic palette, if that makes any sense. I enjoy the chorus and the production, and the melody reminds me of classic J-Pop songs, which I love!

  2. i find that when i listen to the korean ver of this song the syllables flow much better and the girls are more comfortable singing the song! this could probably be why it lacks the ‘oomph’ needed, but for me this is such a solid 9, one of their top 10 singles
