K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Love Spell

Love Spell (from Walpurgis Night – 2020)

Walpurgis Night is GFriend’s most genre-shifting album, which is kind of frustrating since it also served as their swan song. Love Spell’s rootsy guitar and clap-along percussion give off a totally different vibe from most of their material, but the girls pull if off with flair. The chorus has quite a strange melody. Parts of it feel almost slurred. This adds to the gritty atmosphere and works surprisingly well. There’s even a bit of country influence thrown into this blender. It’s also nice to hear the girls sing in a lower register, echoing the song’s off-kilter tone.

  1. This is one of my favorite songs off this album. Very consistent groove throughout, and the “Hey You”s are arresting.

Also I’m a huge fan of whistles in songs.

    Great song overall.
