My Buddy (from Flower Bud – 2015)
Ah, the requisite treacly fan song. You’re always going to get a few of these in the discography of any idol act. At least this one’s quite upbeat. It has that cliched “wave your hands back and forth” energy, though. However, there are some nice touches buoying the song’s fortunes. Parts of the melody (particularly the end of each chorus) remind me of late-90’s R&B-pop – almost like something Christina Aguilera might have delivered as a late-album b-side at the time. The rest of the track is standard light K-pop fare, though.

I’ve never loved this song, but back in 2019 during Gfriend’s Bloom tour in Tokyo, Yuju extended her high note a few extra seconds. Let me tell you, after her being gone for months and then coming back looking really sick 2018/2019, that note extension was like Buddy cocaine. Just magical.

It’s not one of their greats for sure, but I have a special fondness for this song, since it made me give GFriend a chance. There were way more innocent cute girl groups back then and it wasn’t a genre I was particularly interested in (I appreciate it way more now), so I kind of brushed GFriend off as more of the same. But then I heard Yuju’s voice on this track, was super impressed, then went back to listen to all their other songs. That probably would have happened sooner or later, but I’m still grateful to My Buddy!
(Also, singing “My sweetie kitty is you wooooOoooo!” to my cat is fun)

Seeing this comment make me real appreciated for your hard work on this K-Pop A-Z list… I always wondering if some of your review has been schedule beforehand.

Yeah, I usually do a week’s worth at a time so they’re ready to go… but somehow my eyes missed Mr. Blue today even though I’ve already written the review!

I actually love this song. Same issue as “Glow” with the stupid lyrics, but it’s one of the early songs that really lets Yuju do her thing.
The verses are kind of slow, but the chorus makes up for it. In general, GFRIEND is really good at playing with tension and momentum.
It’s also one of the “for the fans” songs that doesn’t suck. I think it’s at least a B-.

I’m surprised this song’s rating is so low, I think it’s one of the best gfriend b sides. It’s one of those songs that gripped me from first listen. The chorus and intro/outro are great hooks. It’s reminiscent of “for you” by lovelyz, though I prefer that song more
