In addition to frequent song covers, ATEEZ members have been stealthily delivering solo tracks through a series called “ATEEZ Present.” I haven’t written about these songs on the blog since I don’t always cover ballads, but Wooyoung’s new Sagittarius has a bit more bounce in its step as well as a glossy performance video.
As my interest in ATEEZ’s music has waned, it’s nice to hear a more vocal-centric track from one of its members. Sagittarius‘s instrumental has the fitful blend of trap and future bass that rarely appeals to me, but it’s anchored by a standout performance that elevates the murky production. Wooyoung belts the melodies with a ton of flair, similar to the style Taemin employed on early standouts like Ace. These melodies also have an unexpected bite. I really like the sound of chorus — the way it rises and pulls back in equal measure. This makes for a satisfying R&B track that’s equal parts vibe and sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-lungs. Among ATEEZ members, Wooyoung doesn’t always get the spotlight he deserves, but material like Sagittarius might just change that.

Cute, but generic.
8 (8, 8, 8, 8) for me.

This is nothing new or particularly exciting but it’s sad that I like this better than the past 3-4 Ateez comebacks.

Wow, trap beats, back again. Lovely vocal, pleasant, but not compelling.

I guess we are just not going to see eye to eye about Ateez. I think their performances and songs are fire. I love all the songs you claimed were bad. I happen to think they’re the most exciting group in Kpop right now, while some of the songs I listen to that you’ve rated 9 are absolutely not it for me. I love their discography, the new songs as well as old. To me they’re better than BTS. But, to each their own.
