Veteran K-pop act Ailee has returned with three (!) new music videos today. Looking at the tracklist of her new album, it appears MMI is the designated title track. It’s also the song with the most YouTube views at this moment so it’s the one I’ll write about today.
To be honest, none of Ailee’s music has clicked with me for years and none of these new songs change that. She’s an incredibly skilled performer with plenty of mega-bangers under her belt, but the ambition that once fueled her music seems to be replaced with what could be described as ‘comfort food for fans.’ MMI dips its feet in current girl group trends, utilizing trendy percussion and soft, rhythmic melodies. As with most songs of this nature, the song is eminently listenable and catchy in a repetitive, earworm way. But with so much similar material clogging the market at the moment, it’s hard to see this breaking through in any big way.

It just does not sound like Ailee. Its the usual trap of a soloist picking a song that was written for a group with a pass-around-the-parts style of vocal lines. Ailee can sing circles around everyone else, why is she picking a sing-song song?

I feel like Ailee hasn’t sounded like Ailee in a long time. Specifically, 2021’s “don’t teach me” but even that didn’t quite reach the heights of her best music. She’s above the sing song stuff, but I saw her perform this on m countdown and I love that you can still tell how skilled she is vocally with this sort material. I need her to reheat the nachos (in the oven)

I do actually like this a bit more than some similar current GG songs but yeah doesn’t really feel very Ailee. Illusion was a bit of a let down too.
