Song Review: Xdinary Heroes – FiRE (My Sweet Misery)

Xdinary Heroes fans are regularly fed by the band, who must be one of the most prolific acts working at the moment. It feels like new music is always just around the corner, whether that’s in the form of fully-promoted comebacks or drips and drabs of digital singles. New single FiRE (My Sweet Misery) falls in the latter category, though I believe they will still be performing it on music shows.

Xdinary Heroes have released a handful of songs I enjoy and a few I dislike very much, but I admire their willingness to experiment with their sound. Being a band affords them more flexibility than idol dance groups and they’ve taken that opportunity to explore different rock sub-genres. FiRE leans further into crushing hard rock than they’ve ever gone on a single, and will likely find an audience that loves this energy. I can’t say I’m usually a fan of this style, though of course there are always expectations. A great song is a great song no matter how it’s arranged.

Unfortunately, FiRE is only a decent song. Beyond all the bombast (and there is plenty of bombast!), the melodies aren’t hitting me the way I’d hope. It’s all very heavy and immediate but after listening I can barely recall anything about the song beyond its bluster. It’s like a My Chemical Romance song without the great emotional chorus that makes moping around in thick eyeliner an enticing prospect.

  1. It has a lotta angst and drama to it, though it also sounds a bit constrained, like it has potential to go further, but also keeps things a little lowkey. I agree the hooks are a little less memorable, but overall, I liked it.

    7.75 (7, 8, 8, 8) for me.

  2. Very yikes the comments he made, but personally, I think his apology was genuine, he even went to the effort to apologize on stage at their next concert which I’ve never heard of an idol doing.

  3. They get away with a mid-level song by managing the volume expertly. Set to 11, except for a few moments to check if our ear drums are still functioning.

  4. Nick, this is hilarious:

But hey, I’ll never say no to thick lashings of guyliner, whatever the decade 😀

This song feels like Part B to the collab they did with Yoon Do Hyun called Instead, minus the screamo.

I’m admittedly very biased here. I love XH, and this song is fun.

  5. I love it. Possibly more than the similar iNSTEAD! I hope they go down this route more on their next album, as I wasn’t as into the sound from the Beautiful Mind.
