Song Review: Stray Kids – BLEEP

Each time Stray Kids release a new album, they tend to film music videos for multiple tracks. As my interest in their music has waned over time, I haven’t always written about these follow up songs — especially now that I have a weekly post where I can spotlight any notable b-sides. Album opener BLEEP (삐처리) was not among those spotlighted b-sides, though it seems to be a favorite of many fans.

By now, you all know that one of my least favorite aspects about Stray Kids’ songs is their reliance on novelty and schtick. This is not unique to them, but it’s an approach that rarely sits well with me because it usually feels forced. As its title suggests, BLEEP is built around the censoring of sound. It’s not as gimmicky as it could be, but still feels like an idea first and a song second.

The track unfolds over a stomping rock beat that pulls back to a moodier soundscape during the pre-chorus. The chorus is largely chanted with a catchy little melodic flourish to close it off. However, most of BLEEP sounds exactly like you’d expect from a Stray Kids song. The energy is more robust than Ceremony, but the melodic turns are predictable and flat. It all works just fine. It just doesn’t stick out within their discography.

  1. I basically agree that this is simply a decent Stray Kids song and it’s really unfortunate that it is more enjoyable than the actual track😭

Although “Ceremony” has been stuck in my head lately, which means it’s risen a bit more in my estimation.

  2. As a B-side, it would actually work. As a B-side that people think makes for A-side material = no, it does not work. Its a classic “we had some ideas for a song, so we recorded it, and it has some interesting bits but doesn’t really work in practice, so we took a vote and decided it would go on the album after all despite some heated debate”. In another scenario it would have been left off the album, but added to the album re-release in 20 years time as a bonus track.

  3. If you’re going to write pure hate, why write anything at all? It’s not helpful. It’s not doing anyone any good. Why come online just to spread negativity?? Do you honestly think tearing things down makes you look cool? If all you’re going to do is hate, keep your opinions to yourself. Writing entire posts just to bash songs doesn’t make you insightful or clever — it just makes you look bitter. Why waste time writing about songs you don’t even like, just to hate on them?

    • Wow, you have an interesting definition of “hate.” I had no idea calling something “fine, but not a standout” and giving it a “C+” grade qualified as hate! Does that mean anything other than unadulterated praise is “hate,” now? Very confusing…

      • When it comes to SKZ it’s best you watch their INTRO videos. It’s a video they release the day before an album where they talk about the recording and thought process behind each of their songs. It’s better to do that than assume their thoughts based on vibes.

Another thing is that treating their production style as something that needs to be “corrected” (for lack of a better word) is very futile. They’re a group that produces their own music. They know what they want to release. Your criticism is almost like you’re treating their music as if they don’t know what they’re doing and that you can do it better.

Finally SKZ music hasn’t digressed bc it literally can’t. It’s the same music they’ve been doing since debut. Hell some of their “new” releases are songs that have been waiting to be release for years.

  4. Oh look, it’s Nick trying to nitpick and overanalyze every single detail he doesn’t like about a Stray Kids song again (For your current series of reviews regarding SKZ, I’d say they’re a bit predictable and fall flat. This nitpicking has grown rather repetitive and gimmicky.) (Like, I used to enjoy reading your reviews so much- especially the way you carefully analyzed each part of a song in terms of what you did and didn’t like. I’m not even a Stay but it feels like all you ever write nowadays are just complaints regarding every single group and any song they release that you happen to come across.) (I doubt you’ll see this but no, this isn’t meant to be a hate comment or anything, I’m just a bit disappointed, I guess. Looking forward to the day you’ll write actual reviews again rather than just nitpicking and complaining about songs! <3)
