Though Oh My Girl remain stubbornly inactive as a group, its members occasionally release material. Mimi is the group’s rapper and has dabbled in OST tracks before, but Bish Bash Bosh is her official solo debut. The song’s retro electro-hip-hop sound offers an interesting playground for her.
When K-pop goes hip-hop (which is like… always), more often than not they’re referencing the 90s. However, Bish Bash Bosh sets its sights further back all the way to the roots of the genre when dance music gave way to rap. This is mixed with some very 2000s production to create a song that feels at once referential and plucked out of time.
While I admire this approach, I wish Bish Bash Bosh was more of a fleshed out song. Instead, it feels like a production showcase. Its rapping takes a conversational approach that’s rarely concerned with rhythm and the hook is simply a repetition of monosyllabic words. This gives Bish Bash Bosh a very repetitive, one-note feel even as the instrumental creates all sorts of chaos beneath it. I could imagine enjoying this at a party as a welcome blast of energy, but can’t say I’d listen to it much in any other setting.

I’m thinking that if this were released by an 18 year old, we might all be going yay fresh voice good start you go girl looking forward to what you do next etc. But knowing that this is an older idol, it colors my thoughts too much.

Age isn’t the factor coloring this song for me. It’s that as a miracle, I’m so familiar with mimi’s delivery that I didn’t expect her solo debut to be…lacking focus(?). You can hear this sort of flow in OMG’s discography every now and again, but I’m used to her being more sassy, and connecting her lines in a satisfying way

For me, I am so enamored by OMG vocals, that I hardly remember the raps even though I have listened to the group’s song a lot. So for me, Mimi is not someone’s whose flow ever stood out to me, so she may as well be a new debut to me.

I never considered that happening. Since I rap along maybe that helps them stick lol

We are two sides of the same coin, each hearing something different on the same thing.
Me, I have sung in so many vocal ensembles that “Windy Day” is all about picking out harmony lines in its great chorus. I went back just now to re-listen if there is even a rap line in Windy Day … is there … there is no rap in Windy Day. Fifth Season has no rap. Coloring Book has the cheerleader chants but no rap. As my top three OMG, yeah, I guess I never listened to Mimi rap much.

Umm….no shade, but maybe she should just stick to variety show and let others do the singing parts

i think its super cute and catchy, but i agree her flow was a little jarring on first listen. i got used to it pretty quickly but i do feel like this song didn’t showcase her abilities as much as it did the production. i love the fun vibes + the mv, and im a miracle so im definitely biased, but it’s sitting around an 8.25 for me!
