Song Review: HITGS – A-Ha!

Since their debut, rookies HITGS have released some truly diabolical material — songs I’ve disliked but have gone on to begrudgingly sing along with because they’re so stupidly catchy. This doesn’t make the music good, but it leaves an impression. New single A-Ha! dispenses with many of the gimmicks of the group’s past to embrace the muted dance sound favored by this year’s girl groups.

I’ve written about so many songs like this over the past few years that it’s become difficult to describe them in new ways. They almost always end up rated in the “7’s” because they’re neither good nor bad. They simply exist as inoffensive atmosphere. It’s as if they take the idea of a dance track and smooth out every possible edge until you’re left with music that feels oddly detached and compressed. When listening to a song like this, I feel like I’m half-asleep, able to discern the overall shape of the music but struggling to focus on the details. It’s almost intangible, and that quality makes it hard to attach any real character to the track or the group performing it.

  1. Their concept and songs seems to be made for kids (quite understandable since the concept fit the group’s age and visual), but I doubt kids would know about kpop in the first place to even listen to the song. The song itself is kind of boring despite being pretty catchy. Overall, I gave it a 6.5.

  2. I saw the title and I immediately panicked, because a-ha is near and dear to my heart, my first single – album – concert boy band crush ever. I don’t fit into the concert t-shirt at all anymore, you betcha I still have it.

Phew, this song today nothing to do with my a-ha.

Anyway, the song sort of coasts along on a vibe, saying or feeling not much of anything. You know those snacky puffs that don’t taste of much but are easily gobbled down but are neither food nor satisfying. (eg “Pirate Booty” in the US.) That. This.
