I often write about K-pop groups needing to find a “signature sound,” but that doesn’t mean the sound is always for me. Boy group POW have taken an oddly subdued approach with their music, leaning on elements of downbeat jazz to fuel their aesthetic. It hasn’t worked all that well commercially, but at least their discography is somewhat consistent.
Wall Flowers is a particularly reserved example of the POW sound. Muted keys pepper an instrumental driven by atmospheric synth and barely-there, skittering percussion. It’s not too dissimilar from current girl group trends, though the guys approach this in a different way. Rather than offer airy fragments of melody, they often rely on the chant-singing usually found in blustery boy group tracks. This forges an interesting contrast, though I’m not sure it works. I’m interested in hearing a version of this instrumental with slick R&B style vocals rather than the incessant sing-talk. We get peeks here and there and they sound great. Unfortunately, the full song doesn’t hit in the way it should.

I am intrigued but not charmed. Not quite yet at least.
It sounds like the jazz part is in one room doing their thing. And these guys are in another room doing their thing. And the two streams of music happen to intersect nicely in a cohesive way. Maybe that is art and serious craft going on. Or maybe both musical sides are just simple enough that it works together easily.
So for today, I am going to nod my head and walk on, and wait to hear more from them and how the sound develops.

This song is probably my least favorite of their releases, but I’m going to listen to it while driving and decide what to do with it🙃
I loved Valentine, Being Tender, Favorite, Sunset, Gimme Love, Amazing and Dazzling. Even their version of Boyfriend grew on me. I love that they have different/softer approach to Kpop. They usually sound pretty too.

I don’t think i’ve listened to a song by these guys before, and if I did I definitely don’t remember it. This song was recommended to me on youtube (not sure why) but i’m glad I clicked cause I really liked this. I’m rarely a fan of the chanting/shouting/sing-talk nonsense that kpop has been dishing out, but somehow it works here. It kind of reminds me of Boytude (which I love).
I have to admit, I might be more intrigued with the choreography then the actual song but either way, I actully saved it to my likes on spotify.

I really like this song, I heard it in a mix and though it was ArRc, it sound like something they would release.
I was not that interested in their other releases but this one got me. That understated MV is also a highlight. I often get overwhelmed by MVs, too much going on, too many visuals so this one showing of the choreo and focusing on each member in this monochrome setting is really eye catching.
Also, give me a kpop song with some jazzy piano and trumpet and I am locked in.
