Song Review: Twice – ME+YOU

Twice are no strangers to fan songs. In fact, their career has been one long ode to their fans. I can’t think of another group who has consistently catered to fans’ taste and musical expectations as well as Twice have. That’s not to say they haven’t experimented here and there with sound and style, but their discography has always felt especially devoted toward giving their fans exactly what they want. I admire this, even when a certain song or album might not be to my liking.

ME+YOU is an actual fan song, designed to celebrate Twice’s tenth anniversary. As such, it spends most of its time being fluffy and pleasant rather than stretching itself in any novel directions. The production continues to draw upon the bubbly r&b/pop of the late 90s that made a big impression on their last mini album. This is a sound that’s very nostalgic for me and instantly earns ME+YOU bonus points even as I recognize that the song itself isn’t all that interesting.

There’s a satisfying smoothness to the melodies and performance, but I’m craving a deeper groove. On its face, the production seeks to replicate the futuristic, skittering She’kspere/Darkchild style of so many great late-90s classics, but you can tell it’s a knockoff. The facsimile is strong enough to elicit warm feelings but doesn’t quite hit the highs (or undulating lows) it needs to. Overall, it’s an inessential Twice song that’s also impossible to dislike.

  1. I love how they went simple with this song!! TWICE works best with simple sweet songs (See their “BDZ” album).

This is exactly what I wanted out of them! TWICE is having a year for the record books

  2. As a ONCE I agree with your review. The song it not that special yet it’s warm nostalgic fun. As yourself I love the bubbly 90’s R&B/pop sound. TWICE is just really good at that sound and their vocals keeping getting more layered.

This is just a song for their fans, it wasn’t meant as a new big hit. Although I am really waiting for the next I Can’t Stop Me, Talk That, Talk, TT, Cheer Up, Likey, Fake & True, Breakthrough etc etc. They have always kept making good music (especially when looking at their albums as a whole) but they have to step it up with their singles in my opinion. They need to branch out again.

The MV is so well done. It’s funny and nostalgic and it makes clever use of TWICE’s past.

  3. Wow, 10 years! Congratulations to Twice!

This is a good fan service song, but it could have a touch more energy. Or perhaps I am too used to every Super Junior fan service song meant for the rah rah moments at the concerts. This Twice song today is more streaming-style in the retro 90’s/00’s R&B style popular this year.

But hey, if they are happy, then I am happy for them.

  4. while not knock it out of the park, it’s very nice.

i’m just relieved that the song isn’t bad. it’s an 8.25 for me (8,8,8,9)

  5. Not a knockout but it hits the spot with a good video. I also like that the album is just one group song and nine solos (Jeongyeon’s very Americana). Twice never really stopped being around like SNSD or OMG so I think that helped tame my expectations

  6. Loved this release, especially because it took me back to 2015. Can’t believe I used to be a little bit of a hater because I disliked their sugary/childish concept. They for sure have grown on me, especially this year with them leaning into the 90’s/y2k sound. The production style and their vocals captures that specific era so well, which just contributes to this nostalgic feeling they’re evoking on the music video.

I think this R&B-pop style fits them so well and I don’t know if they’ll stick to it for their future releases (if there’s gonna be any, because you never know), but it works for them.
