Song Review: Catch The Young – Amplify

While Catch The Young haven’t exactly caught the charts on fire, they’ve slowly and steadily built a solid discography. Today marks the release of their first full album — a huge achievement for any band. This project is led by title track Amplify, which takes their rock sound in a more energetic direction.

I prefer Catch The Young’s music when its at its most upbeat and anthemic. Amplify fits that description, galloping out of the gate with plenty of energy. It’s a feel-good rock singalong, building toward a catchy chorus that segues into a fast-paced guitar riff. The schtick gets a bit repetitive as the song goes on, mostly because the chorus is so breathless and explosive and isn’t always set-up in a way that compliments this continual pay-off. However, I think this would work very well in a live setting. It would certainly pump up the crowd!

  1. I often right how someone sings something hard so effortlessly it just seems to flow like water, the listener sometimes doesn’t often realize that a line or section is harder than it sounds.

Here, this song. They are trying to do interesting things with chord progression and chromaticism, and it works for a measure or two, but then it starts to sound labored and forced. (I don’t know who wrote this so I will call them they.) It sounds like they were trying to cross prog rock from the 70’s 80’s but make it kpop, and cleaved too closely to the kpop side so all the free wheeling improv bits got lost. Or were never there. Its just too composed.

Xenoterran (a former regular) would pop his head above the parapet whenever I mentioned prog rock and give a dozen examples. He once recommended a 20 minute long Genesis, original with Peter Gabriel and Phil still on drums, which was … something. Peter was dressed as a sunflower iirc.

I suppose I should give them here today an extra half point for the keytar. Flat 8 from me.
