Song Review: THE SSYNDROME – Good Boy

THE SSYNDROME made their debut late last year, emerging in an era flush with rock bands. Just this year alone, it feels like I’m writing about a rock act every week — and that’s not even including all the rock-influenced comebacks from idol groups. Korea is really into guitars at the moment.

This isn’t a bad thing, but while I enjoy rock music it usually takes something unique or ear-catching to fully invest me in the sound. That can be a melodic feature or the addition of some unexpected instrumental texture. THE SSYNDROME’s configuration is classic, lacking an ear-catching element that might set them apart from other bands. However, the vocal performance is strong and Good Boy boasts a catchy chorus that reminds me of a hook we might have heard in K-pop’s first generation, when rock bands were all the rage. The instrumental crackles with energy, chugging along with full intensity as the song unfurls. These two factors combine to forge an effective comeback. I’m not sure if I’ll still remember it in a year’s time, but Good Boy checks all the boxes it needs to and points toward a promising future for THE SSYNDROME.

  1. It is a song like this that makes me want to look up what the heck NFlying are up to these days, as it sounds like NFlying circa 2018-2019.

I happen to big elL Love that era of NFlying, so this song is at least a big elL Like from me.

I don’t like either the production editing or the video editing, perhaps both. Since the drums are so forward in the mix, it is easy for me to pick on them right now. Visual and audio don’t match, though noting the visual cuts so often it is hard to tell, but I feel like I am hearing more Toms than I am seeing. But then listening more closely, the drums sound like there are multitracked overlays. Whyeeeee?

My point is that if a rock song’s bones are good enough, you don’t really have to amp it up with bucu overlays of additional tracks. Just play it straight with heart and soul, viz every 3 or 4 piece rock band ever. The song by itself should make you make ugly rock faces and shift your body into the music. I feel like the product as released today is over-produced.

Semi-off topic: I was trying to google a live live version to see how they perform this live, see how does it rock live, instead came across this gem about another song named Good Boy (GD x Taeyang) with live live playing, with is Awesome, so I thought I would share.
