AtHeart debuted last summer with Plot Twist, whose title of course reminds me of another iconic K-pop song of recent years. Unfortunately, their sound was less iconic, echoing many current girl group trends. It’s been a too-long hiatus between releases for such a new act, so I was eager to see if this break resulted in any sort of sonic reinvention.
Shut Up meets fifth gen expectations, for better or worse. It fits squarely within the “subdued” branding of many modern girl groups, using familiar sing-talk phrasing during its verses and blooming into a relatively uneventful chorus. The hook is an earworm, but I can’t help but think it would be way more effective if set against a less languid backdrop. It feels as if Shut Up wants to be quirky and upbeat. Instead, it simply plods along before ending prematurely. There’s no build or payoff — just two minutes of pleasantness that will be forgotten minutes after it ends.

This sounds like a leftover ILLIT song. The hook trying to be a tik tok trend with some pleasant connective tissue to create something that approximates an entity known as song. There are a few others also doing this sort of schtick. I feel for the kids these days if this the sort of music they are being fed.
Another note: I doubt these girls will ever sing this song live. That opening hook is so clipped, it would take a really good technical singer to enunciate all those consonants at that speed clearly. Then the section that could be called the verse kicks in, and there is little music to indicate a key, so I just don’t know they will stay in key without in-microphone tuning.

I liked Push Back, Dot Dot Dot, and Knew Me from their last album, but their titles tracks feel so uninspiring so far. I also feel like they have yet to solidify a unique sound or concept. They debuted around the same time as ifeye, and I always get the two groups confused because their songs seem interchangeable.

I really enjoyed PlotTwist, very underrated IMO, but this is very generic borderline nursery kpop. In between Fifty Fifty or bands like Cherry Bullet, no real personality and no bite… Not awful but b-side material.

their predebut song “good girl” is really well made and catchy. unfortunately it’s been downhill from there
