THIS WEEK IN K-POP: Ranking the New Releases from March 1 – 7

At the end of each month, I compile my top three K-pop title tracks and list a ton of honorable mentions. But each Sunday, I’ll offer a compendium of the week’s new releases featured on the blog. And even more than that, I’ll attempt to rank them from my least-to-most-liked. I invite you to share your own rankings as well. The comments section of these posts is also a great spot to discuss anything that has happened in K-pop during the week.

Make sure to click on the title of any release to read the full review and see its initial rating. Consider this your one stop Bias List shop each and every Sunday!

  1. I’m a little late to recent comebacks, but from the past 2 weeks I’ve liked (in no particular order):

    Notable Bsides:

    IVE – Fireworks

WOODZ – Stop That & NaNaNa

    Titles:

WOODZ – Human Extinction… (the days we are living and this guy decides to give us this title🫤). I have no idea what the song is about but it perfectly fits my current mood.

Asc2nt – Still Rose…very catchy and I find myself humming to it a lot. I think I mentioned this in the original review, but I really like the vocals, even though they are not over the top, they give me a pleasant listening experience.

Lavin – Junk Love…not my favorite from him but it stayed in the Playlist so that counts for something.

IVE – Blackhole…again, it doesn’t really excites me, but it stayed in the Playlist so I guess it’s ok.

  2. i tried to listen to some german schlager because i wanted to see how the origin of the genre held up compared to sweden and i can say i was fairly disappointed, a lot of german schlager feels predictable and safe, built for drinking parties and old people to watch on variety TV, lacking the sky-high choruses and weaponized cheese that make up the best of swedish schlager

here are some examples of german schlager i listened to:

now compare that to swedish schlager:

see the jump in quality? you may think swedish schlager is also cheesy triteness as well but it’s definitely better than the german stuff, so yeah i’d take linda bengtzing over helene fischer any day

    • I don’t have many thoughts, to be honest. It’s just not for me. I’d love to hear a group revisit the late-90s R&B sound but everyone attempting that now can’t seem to find the kind of melodies that were so great during that era. Also, “tweak” is not a pleasant word to frame a pop song around.

(so I guess I do have thoughts lol)
