Rookies Baby DONT Cry have a new mini album on the horizon, but like so many of their peers they’re kicking off promotions with a pre-release. I enjoyed their last title track I DONT CARE quite a bit and Shapeshifter continues its pop-forward sound, sadly leaving the anthemic synths behind.
The energy is less bombastic this time around, opting for a leisurely pop sound with a series of (shape) shifting tempos. Of these moments, the chorus is most sprightly and pleasantly melodic. However, this refrain deserves a stronger instrumental supporting it. The production changes here, but remains somewhat faceless. There’s just not much oomph to the arrangement, and with Baby DONT Cry’s light, airy vocals over the top I’m struggling to find much to latch onto.
Because of this, we’re left with a pleasant (and pleasantly toothless) pop song that’s cosplaying attitude without serving up much actual verve. The bones of Shapeshifter are solid. It just needs more interesting execution.

It is actually a nice song but it lacks personality for both the song and the performers. The energy level is set at lazy Saturday morning.
