Song Review: Xdinary Heroes – X room

The ever-prolific Xdinary Heroes have another mini album lurking around the corner and are teasing it today with pre-release X room. I really enjoyed October’s ICU and hope that the group’s music will continue in that vein. X room is a very different beast, but its more reserved sound makes for a decent teaser.

With band music so popular at the moment, it becomes more difficult for a group like Xdinary Heroes to stand out. From my vantage point, their strongest calling card is their quirkiness. A track like X room is very pretty and well-executed, but threatens to sound like everyone else at the moment (most notably their agency seniors DAY6). However, every band needs depth and width in their discography. You can’t simply repeat the same sound over and over. X room‘s sentimental heft offers something a bit different for Xdinary Heroes — at least when it comes to their promoted material.

Whether or not this will enjoy the same lasting popularity as a chart monster like You Were Beautiful remains to be seen, though it certainly feels like an attempt to do so. It’s not something I’d choose to listen to often, but for a certain mood and setting X room definitely hits its mark.

  1. The verses could be stronger, but as is typical these days some songwriters seem to think moving back and forth between two notes counts as melody.

The vocal is great, raw, soaring at times, laden with emotion but not too unctuous. The rest of it could be from one of several other active kbands, but that said, if I were a whatever-their-fandom-name-is member, I think I would be quite satisfied. It will probably sound great live too, all the stage lights going, light sticks swaying back and forth.
