STAYC: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. I love STAYC so much. Another group I can consistently count on every release.

Likely an 8.5 average rating for me. I’m not sure they have any TT below 8 for me.

    • They found their sound with this song – and the whole mini-album is marvelous.

According to the STEREOTYPE recording behind, this was the first time the producers worked like this: they gave each girl a demo track for they can try to sing the whole song. Based on this, then they gave each girl her parts of the song. It was not pre-defined.

  2. For me, their imperial phase was in the beginning: So Bad to Beautiful Monster. I wish I could get into the material after that, but they somehow lost me. I miss that production style (by Black Eyed Pilseung, I think?).

  3. I like STAYC’s discography as a whole but somehow I’m still stuck on So Bad and have spent the last 5 years desperately hoping they return to that sound! 😩

  4. I learned to love pop music with STAYC. I fell in love with the work of producers Black Eyed Pilseung (Twice’s “Fancy” and Apink’s “Eung Eung” were a total shock) just before i discovered they started to produce their own GG – So Bad and ASAP were already out at this moment.

I pre-ordered Stereotype. It was the first time i preordered something. The Stereotype concept trailer is one of the most touching thing i ever watched. This album changed my life – not only as a music listener. I hum their songs on a daily basis. Some words randomly caught can instantly reactivate a song. STAYC is a part of my life since fall 2021.

Now they might be in their last phase. I wish the girls still can make songs & performances until they feel they have nothing more to give, nothing more to say. A final era like an apotheosis.

Half of their discography is great. To me, their fundamental works so far are (alphabetical order): ASAP, BEAUTIFUL MONSTER, BEBE, Cheeky Icy Thang, Fancy (TWICE cover), GPT, I’LL BE THERE, I Wanna Do, LOVE FOOL, PIPE DOWN, POPPY, RUN2U, SLOW DOWN, SO BAD, STEREOTYPE, YOUNG-LUV.

Their best album is “Stereotype”. Their masterworks are “RUN2U” & “BEBE”. The best song to be introduced to STAYC is “POPPY”. My favorite is “GPT”, that encapsulates their esthetic the most.

Daedanhi gamsahamnida, girls! One day you went down on me, and your presence never left. Je vous aime.
