Since leaving RIIZE, Seunghan has re-debuted as the XngHan&Xoul project, releasing the upbeat Waste No Time last summer. That song showed a ton of potential but didn’t quite fulfill on its ambitions. Now, with new mini album Glow, he takes a deeper dive into club music and the sound feels more assured and exciting.
House music is really having a moment today. XngHan roughs up the template a bit with Glow, adding tropical flourishes and glitchy electro breakdowns during the chorus. In this way, the song feels almost like a taster platter of SM Entertainment’s history with dance music. I hear various eras of the agency, tied together into a quick-moving, no-filler track. Despite this diversity in sound, Glow occasionally flirts with a generic dance/DJ sound. Much of this is due to XngHan’s performance, which is quite straightforward throughout. I would have loved to hear a more dynamic vocal arrangement, whether that means bringing in backing vocals or simply layering his voice in key places.
With that said, I’m delighted to hear dance music at the forefront of K-pop again. Even better, Glow never relies on gimmicky catchphrase hooks. The song is fully sung, and even when the production upends the instrumental during the chorus, this spoken-word bit is deployed with a sense of urgent pace. It’s an explosion of energy through and through and makes you want to get up and dance.

A day with three songs rated a 9, 9 and even a nice 8.75! What a day!
As for this song, it’s fun, a straight-forward burst of energy! I admit the sudden switchup pisses me off but it doesn’t matter when it’s worth its great outro. In that sense, it reminds me of Cravity’s Set Net G0?!, a song with a switch up in the chorus that may throw you off, but it also leads to a fun, fleshed out outro. That song grew on me and I’m sure this will too.
Rating’s the same.

i lovee this, i’ve been streaming it alongside tws’ song. it sounds like something sm artists would release more than 10 years ago. i agree with the vocals bit, it would’ve sounded bigger with some harmonies. i’m giving it the same rating as you

I wasn’t into the “taste that” part but I love the rest and the album as a whole. What did you think of the bsides?

And this makes the twelfth K-pop song I’ve heard with “rizz” in the lyrics 💀

And then it ends, just like that. Cuts off almost mid-line. C’mon people.
I think it is spritely and poppy and a bit generic. This could have been by almost any male soloist active in kpop today with small tweaks. Also interesting that almost the entire sung vocal is in the upper part of his register, mostly within the same 4-5 notes. It starts there, it stays there, it ends there.
Rating is perhaps a low 8 for me.

I couldn’t place why the vocals sounded the same the whole time as they also sounded distinct. This comment was like the big reveal in a mystery movie for me. Thank you.

I didn’t know what to feel about the switch-up yesterday but it flows better now. the rest of the song is very strong & the album is great too. Wishlist is my current favorite

I’m living for the energy being put out in all these songs today – I’ve used that word in all my comments today haha. Love the production on this, very frenetic during the chorus.

I like it. It’s pretty straightforward but it still has some character and unexpectedness. It’s an 8.5 for me.

Hearing so much 2010s in here and I’m here all day for it. Lots of fun bells and whistles throughout. I’m almost a little sad I read Mymagoogle’s comment on the vocal range of the song because now I can’t not hear it haha.
Luckily, there is enough going on that it doesn’t kill the song. Rating would be 8,9,9,8 = 8.5

It’s not an uncommon phenomenon – see for example DK+Seungkwan (of Seventeen) recent release. Also not necessarily bad, it just means that they aren’t coloring with all the colors in their vocal paint box. Sometimes smaller and closer is nicer than the full out all over the place vocal exercise showing off.

meghan trainor’s shimmer was like the final nail in the coffin for the whole “talking over a club beat” trend (i mean her discography has never been that good) so hearing a house song just go for the jugular and never letting up throughout the whole thing excited me so much you cant believe it
