I was pretty harsh on Cortis’s debut-era music, but the truth is most of those songs have grown on me. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to them, but I understand the overall appeal. And with last month’s REDRED, the group tiptoed into a sound that could prove quite unique and compelling, only to tiptoe back out of it on this new EP.
With last week’s TNT and now Acai, the group have done something even worse than being obnoxious troublemakers: they’ve delivered boring retreads. The problem with labeling your music as “disruptive” is that by definition disruption only lasts for a short period before it’s absorbed, watered down and made profitable. On a song like Acai, Cortis attempt to repeat what worked in the past but they’ve left the hooks behind in favor of tuneless sludge. That’s why — even for “disrupters” — a certain level of timeless songcraft remains vital.
The acai berry is known to be a densely nutritious superfood, both delicious and great for you. Acai the song leaves a foul taste in your mouth and stumbles over its same repeated phrases so many times that its three minutes feel endless. As usual, the members’ vocals are smothered in effects — as if they’ve used one those voice-disguising apps. Maybe for the next single they should fire up VoiceChanger+ from the iTunes store and use the “robot” filter. Or better yet… the “zombie” one! That would be good for a cheap laugh, which seems to be the only thing a track like this is aiming for anyway.

The first paragraph, damn! I wonder how’d you rate their debut album songs now.
But yeah, it is just… nothing. Like, it sounds like it’s tryna sound humourous or silly, but it just comes off as dead, soulless and serious. And idk how they manage to do it, but they manage to make toenails sound more appetizing than acai with this song (me who never had acai in my life)
Anyways, 4.25 (5, 4, 5, 3) for me. And we now have 9 songs rated in the 3s and below since 2022, revisited lowest rated songs part 2 when? And they also are now at an average of 5.82 from a 6.16 🥴

this ain’t even the worst song on the album 🥀 I try hard not to be needlessly negative about musicians, especially new ones trying to find their footing, but this album is undeniably atrocious. Acai is a 3.75

I must be the only person on this blog who didn’t like RedRed… just like in this song, because of the effects on their voices, it sounds like they’re choking or something. I dunno, it’s a weird way to describe how they sing, but they kinda sound like penguins… 😭
And it’s even more ironic because I do think the group has its own identity, but it doesn’t feel very promising to me. Like… I just can’t picture these guys older and still singing like this…

Oof that’s a harsh rating. I was wanting to be contrary and find something positive in this but I’m struggling. It’s so monotonous, not a hook or scrap of melody to hang onto. Some of their previous stuff has been… not for me but I could see the appeal, but this is a low.

I’ll admit that I jumped down to the rating before reading the review and laughed out loud. I agree with your review though.
Go and RedRed definitely grew on me, but the rest of their limited discography is really unlistenable , including this song!

I think this relaxed, low-pressure style suits Cortis very well, including their overall character. They don’t need to overdo anything, and honestly, I think they could just keep going in this direction. Personally, this isn’t the kind of music I enjoy listening to, so I probably won’t be paying much attention to them in the future.

seriously even beyond my own bias toward them this song is just phenomenal. great hooks n melodies at nearly every single turn n despite being stuffed to the brim production wise it never feels like its too much. this is just downright euphoric to me

Even though I’ve determined that they’re not for me, I appreciate how clear their brand is, it makes their existent somewhat more valuable to me than groups who switch it up every comeback

I think instrumentals are carrying the new songs today… again, interesting production, but lackluster melodies and lyrics. Their music has a specific vision and sounds that I don’t care much for, but at least it’s clear and strong.
