BEAST: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

Check out BEAST’s placement on the ULTIMATE ARTIST RANKING page!

*Beast are one of a very few acts whose career I am splitting into two different entities. Their work as Highlight will be evaluated at a later time.

  1. hi Nick, any updated thoughts on 9muses WILD? is it a 10 like you said before or did it fall to a 9.75 😦

and if it truly did fall, is this the only time a song fell from legendary status?

    • I don’t think it fell for him, maybe he hadn’t listened to ‘Wild’ in a long time, got overexcited and gave that score without giving it much thought. Everybody’s susceptible to a little bit of nostalgia bias. We also have seen that he’s also usually susceptible to recency bias as well, He drafted ”side effects” down as an honorable mention to his Top 100 best kpop songs of all time and we have seen that there are numerous songs he would much rather place over that now (Teen Top’s Rocking, 9Muses’ Ticket and Figaro.) It happens!

      • well, if it went from a 10 to a 9.75, then it DID fall. it was also like number 15 in the 2013 countdown, ahead of multiple 10 rated songs, but I see what you’re trying to say.

        • Yeah, you’re correct. It technically did fall, but I was moreso trying to say that maybe it was an error. As per his Top 100 list, ‘Side effects’ should be like a 9.75!

      • it’s also kind of weird because i’ve never seen a song fall from legendary status before; I’d always assumed that if it became a 10, then it stayed a 10.

  2. One of my personal favourites! Thought they would have broken the legends category due to how much of your early posts gloat about them being among your bias groups but I suspect most of their material did not age as well to reach that point.

Midnight’s almost perfect to me, I would give that a 9.25! Breathe is more like an 8.5 to me, still very good though. Agree with Shadow and Fiction being among your top songs by them.
