H//PE Princess took the unusual approach of releasing their title track weeks before the mini album dropped. Stolen was a repetitive but weirdly enjoyable take on retro hip-hop, but follow-up One Day reveals a new side to the group. For an act billed as a ‘hip-hop girl group,’ they’ve got some solid vocalists on their roster.
One Day is one of those inspirational pop tracks meant to soundtrack H//PE Princess’s journey so far. Unsurprisingly, its music video features past clips from the survival show that formed them. Meanwhile, the song signals its positive vibe with plenty of resounding drum fills and feel-good chanting. It’s proudly cheesy in its uplift, and I appreciate that. We don’t hear songs like this very often in today’s jaded pop market. Yes, it feels like the soundtrack to a morning TV show or campaign commercial, but there’s a place for this uncomplicated sentiment. One Day portrays this vibe as well as any other track. If I believed in the concept of a “guilty pleasure,” this would easily be part of that list.
