There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.
As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.
Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

Ngl, I thought that they’d end up in the Legends category but an 8.75 is still impressive! They got some bangers in their catalogue and I like the cheesy silly fun of Fxxk It, it gets an 8.75 for me lol

They do have their ups and downs.

Unfortunately they do…
Their highs are so high that we tend to forget the lows.

Their whole Alive era was one of the most legendary comebacks in the history of kpop. I remember my friends and I were talking about it for months and I keep hearing the songs everywhere for years.
Even a few months ago, a new restaurant just had their opening and they played the songs from the Alive EP. 😭😭😭
I love them with all my heart.

Why are the wearing oxygen masks in that picture???

They’re wearing oxygen masks because in this photo they had just left the studio after recording a song with such impact that it consumed all the oxygen in the room. Result: a collective outbreak of respiratory failure caused by bangers 😔

The MADE / Alive era was fantastic to live through in real time. Every so many months another few awesome songs. Somewhere in the middle, YG announced that the guys needed to take off an extra month before releasing the next because they were exhausted and we all thought , yes ok, but please come back.
One thing Big Bang did so cleverly is allocation of parts. For most of the lead singles, each person gets a full verse to own, so the individual personalities come out. They aren’t sliced and diced into individual lines or even individual words, they get whole stanzas of 4 lines.
I think Fantastic Baby / Bang Bang Bang were among the best drop chorus songs in kpop, so much so that other groups kept and keep on trying drop choruses and its just not the same.
