RAINBOW: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. I’m not an old k-pop fan, but I still know of and listen to some older k-pop. I have never heard of this group before, though. Have they been mentioned on this blog before? Maybe I missed the post?

I decided to give their songs a listen. I like A and To Me, but the clear standout for me is Mach. Those synths and the guitar, combined with the strong vocal performance, make this song an easy 10 for me. Maybe I’m exaggerating and over glazing it a bit because of the novelty, but this has to be one of the best girl group k-pop songs I’ve ever heard. Seriously, I heard the intro and immediately thought, “Well damn… this already sounds incredible.” I really love the slightly tense and dark atmosphere it has going on. For a song called Mach, its actually quite slow, but it doesn’t feel that slow either, which is quite fascinating :DD

  2. I love RAINBOW’s discography. I also recommend listening to their bsides. Cosmic Girls is one of my favorites.

Not sure if you’ll see this, but would you also do this for first generation groups/idols as well? For example, 1TYM or g.o.d?

  3. i’m surprised how your top 10 list of rainbow, which is 10 years ago, is still almost near accurate to your ratings today

  4. I feel like rainbow didn’t release a lot of music for a group with decent success in korea. Thanks to the quality of their title tracks, I don’t think i noticed till it was organized in this way

  5. Not a part of this feature but I Believe will always be my favorite Rainbow track. Also Sweetune-produced, unsurprisingly.
