AOMG’s hip-hop girl group Keyveatz made their pre-debut back in April, setting the stage for today’s full debut. I couldn’t tell you much about that earlier track beyond that fact that I didn’t enjoy it, and OXY‘s title brings to mind the slang term for the well-known opioid that’s caused a wave of addiction over the years. That’s probably not the idea Keyveatz want listeners to come away with here, but letters and words have meaning, intentional or not!
Sigh. Some songs are tricky from the start. OXY opens with a truly obnoxious synth loop that sounds like a deranged otter yelping. I don’t know why K-pop’s take on hip-hop almost always comes paired with the most annoying samples imaginable. You can craft a satisfying hip-hop beat without resorting to these nerve-killing, ear-piecing sounds, I swear!
OXY grows more interesting as it goes and I appreciate its attempt to blend hip-hop and club music. The song walks the line between both genres, ultimately failing to pull the best from each. However, there are moments where I can hear what OXY might have been if it streamlined its approach. Unfortunately, the production and execution is so prickly and shrill that it makes OXY a difficult listen. The track lacks moments of payoff that could counter this unsettled experience, making me feel like I’m struggling through something without the promise of satisfaction after that struggle is over.

I was on vacation last week, listening to the loons during twilight. The solo loon call is mysterious and haunting. Some number of loons together out there in the darkness and you wonder dear lord what the heck are they doing out there? Deranged otter yelps have nothing on a couple of loons doing something out there.
As for this song, I think actual deranged otter yelps would have improved it.

Adding: I have no idea how to pronounce their group name, but it looks like a rack of scrabble letters that should make a higher point word than you wind up making but you did ponder for a while if “Keyveatz” is a word to clear the rack but it is not.
(… … plus one letter, scrabble is 7 letters on a rack.)

Huh. There are parts of the production I really like but it suffers from 2 things: 1) It hardly feels filling, there are parts at the end that really do it but layers would have really helped stuff like the verses and that chorus definitely needed some packing with adlibs or some backing vocal, 2) it can just be structurally jarring, most notable from the first chorus just going back to the trap beat. Not much room to transition or breathe, it sort of just switches between styles (trap -> club -> techno, back to the same trap beat from the beginning).
I hate to be immediately skeptical of this group just because they’re from AOMG and we’ve already seen what’s come from LNGSHOT, the only slice of hope is that Jay does not seem to be parasitically linked to them at their core. I’ll watch from the distance because this, in spite of its flaws, is not terrible.

It’s about on par with their previous 2 releases, which is to say, I really like it! Can’t find anything to complain about, it’s just not as exciting as some Young Posse songs which are closest comparisons. The song is very slick and gets me pumped. Their vocal tone is well balanced, not too bratty, not too subdued or mumbled. Vocal effects aren’t overused. Lyrics are whatever… they’re inoffensive. 8.5
