NMIXX: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. Yay, Party O’ Clock rising! Sure, it’s still generic and not their best but it had more bite to it compared to other drum and bass/UK garage songs done by other ggs 😭

Also, they really improved a lot over the years. They streamlined their MIXXpop gimmick for a listenable yet still experimental experience. They also have some amazing albums too so it helps, but they really are one of my favourite 4th gen ggs

    • Do you have any B-sides you would recommend? I like several of their vocalists, but their rapping has always been a turn off for me in a lot of their singles.

      • Yep! I absolutely loved their Fe3O4 Break and Blue Valentine albums, songs like Shape of Love, Run for Roses, Break the Wall, Passionfruit definitely showcases their vocals well and boast amazing choruses, even XOXO would pass off as a decent Red Velvet-esque R&B b-side, and if you’re into something experimental, then Reality Hurts is a banger, it’s so f(x)-esque and I mean it as a mega compliment

      • I love jiwoo rap part in Spinnin on it

also her rap part in Papillon & Sling Shot

also i highly recommend listening to BeatBeat and BooM both are the B-sides in Fe304 Break album

  2. easily one of my top 3 favorite groups of all time! roller coaster had them on my radar and dash solidified them as one of my ults, i would probably have them at around a 8.9 average for me? the only things keeping them below a 9 in my eyes are the fact that o.o, young dumb stupid, and dice are good, but not great (probably low 8s).

on another note, nick, is there any particular reason that heavy serenade didn’t experience a large rise like blue valentine did for you? i personally didn’t mind the second half of the chorus as much, but i assume that might have been a factor with how nursery rhyme-y it sounds…

  4. i recently reread the billboard year end hot 100 for 2014 and my goodness, it might be the worst year for western pop music like ever, just slop after slop in the top 25-ish, like what the hell was in the water during obama’s second term, like how did we go from the magestic music of 2008-2012 to this (i blame lorde)

to give you an idea for how dire of a state pop music was in that year, i’ll give you a sample of the worst of the worst

(keep in mind they put this at #1, you know we have a problem if something this crap could be the most popular song in the world at the time)

not even nostalgia is able to improve my opinion on these crap, they sucked then and they suck now, perfect time for edgelords and music nerds to have a “pop music is shit” phase btw

    • Idk if it’s just because they were so overplayed, but some of these songs really get on my nerves. That Pharrell Williams song definitely doesn’t make me happy

But seriously, Idk if you guys are talking about the ambiguous lyrics or something about the music itself, or maybe the artists performances. Idk… maybe people who are more familiar with their country and culture could explain it better, but I’ve never really thought they were that awful. To me it’s more like “eh, it’s playing. Just let it play”

It’s kind of like that scene in Supernatural where Dean gets turned into a teenager and there’s a Taylor Swift song playing in the background lol

I say this in the sense of not hearing it repeatedly and of being someone who definitely isn’t drawn to the appeal these artists exert

Anyway, I’m saying all this as a Brazilian outsider. These songs were huge on the radio over here but at the end of the day, there was nothing particularly special about them

    • i was actually okay with these songs (ecept meghan trainor’s song i fucking hate that shit with all my life) but they got overplayed so much and now it’s unbearable to listen to. not to mention how poorly they aged for me.

  5. early in their career this was one of the K-pop groups I was the most worried bout when it came to consistency. I kept thinking “omg how is someone like me, who was basically against I Got A Boy, supposed to enjoy a group that’s so obviously built around mixxpop? It’s literally right there in the name”Well, I can say they managed to turn things around. Not in the most spectacular way, but… it could’ve been worse. Sure, sure I’m obviously being subjective

  6. What’s to hate about Dice…. I love that song 😢 I can understand finding it a bit much but rating it lower than Young Dumb Stupid is crazy to me haha. And it’s grown on me a lot with time

    • Dice is a masterpiece, it’s truly a perfect 10 for me and same with O.O.

The thing about both of those songs though, I feel like one cannot “get” them with one listen. When I first discovered NMIXX they were the songs I initially liked the least, but there was something intriguing about them that kept me coming back for another listen. (Watching all their spectacular end-of-2022 award show performances helped too I guess.)
