There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.
As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.
Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

YOUNG POSSE: A Career In Song Ratings

The Breakdown

Macaroni Cheese -> XXL (2023-2024)

Overall Trendline:

The way I had a feeling you’d do Young Posse sooner or later, I could smell the average from a mile away 😭
But yeah, most of their catalogue isn’t that bad but they just had some unfortunate clunkers that terribly tanked their average. Would have been a decent non-starter or a middle of the pack without said clunkers.

They kind of lost me this year, but I loved their debut up to Freestyle. They remain one of my favorite Kpop concerts ever though.

It seems like for the last few singles they’ve gotten less and less of a budget for the mv, which does not seem to bode that well for them. Their last video releases are basically edited home videos shot on the street. They seem to be trying to rebrand – in a recent video interview Doeun repeatedly insisted she wasn’t cute but ‘cool’ (but saying this out loud isn’t cool). What are they rebranding into – a less fun female Cortis that can’t dance as well?

last sentence is kinda crazy seeing as how cortis only has one fun song and from what i’ve seen young posse are great dancers. a lot of their discography isn’t for me but i wish them the best

I guess we disagree. There are countless Cortis videos including practice videos that show off their individual and group dance skills, and their self/co-directed videos show off humor and lightheartedness. (And dammit I’m not even a big fan of theirs, just comparing them to the increasingly random work of YP and their increasing abandonment of group dance moves and what seems to be the management’s decision to throw multiple musical sub genres until maybe something sticks.)
I’d wish YP the best too if they hadn’t gone to Russia to perform for some extra won.

cortis are good dancers (all groups are nowadays), which is why i was defending young posse, as i do not think they are ‘worse’ dancers. from the dance practices i’ve seen, yp are very talented. cortis also does have fun content and the members seem charming, but the only time i think any personality has been translated into their music was redred. a lot of their other songs are weirdly dark and plodding. truthfully i’m not that invested in either group but i just thought the comparison was a little left field and unfair to yp

I am not a fan of rap-focused song in general, but I did enjoy some fantastic rap songs from G Dragon, TREASURE, and CORTIS. Its harder to find good rap-focused songs from girlgroups though and most Young Posse discography are just not good enough.

i only like ate that. it’s a really good song. I hate every other song including macaroni cheese, visa, and the “Mr.” remake. XXL is also rally bad.

Ate That was such an iconic moment for them. It’s funny how they always remind me of that single. The mv was so cartoony, but unforgettable. I never expected to see a gta inspired concept in K-pop, and the version with the extra verse (outro) is still the definitive one to me
