HELLO VENUS: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

    • 2016 Nick would prolly get a cardiac arrest seeing the current state /j but yeah, he’d prolly throw in 1s and 2s like confetti or make up new ratings combination never seen before, and Atmos, Glow, Mmchk, Voyager and You, You would be lucky if they get an 8.75, let alone a 9+ (jk, those songs are still bangers and might still get their current scores lol)

      • The thing is, his ratings were more extreme in both directions back then lol. There were lots of 6 or below rated songs but just as many 9+ rated ones, I think the songs you mentioned would get rated even higher haha. Conversely the past two or three years would match 2016 for its 9+ ratings. I think his rating system became more refined in 2020, but this year’s ratings in particular feels like a callback to 2016, without a lot of the 9’s to balance out..

        • To be fair, 2016 was a really great year for kpop so I don’t blame him for being extreme on both ends lol, and if anything, I’ve seen more songs from 2016-2020 that were rated in 5s to 7s rise than 9+ rated songs during that era fall (iirc, the only instances I can think of are High4’s D.O.A falling from a 9.5 to a 9 and BIGBANG’s Last Dance an 8.75 from a 9.5). So I wouldn’t be surprised if Nick rated the songs I mentioned in 8s (7s even) had they been released in 2016 cause the bar was quite high back then lol. But yeah, I agree that his ratings system became more lax from 2020 onwards. And given the quality of this year, I don’t blame him for giving more scathing reviews and ratings than glowing ones, it’s really been a dire year for kpop, I doubt we’d have enough material for a top 30 songs list, let alone a top 50 \:

  2. Nick, it’s ‘Would you stay for tea?’.

    Anyway, I remember disliking that song when it first came out because of the Canon in D Major sample and the chorus reminded me of ‘Where is the Love’ by the Black Eye Peas. Now, I’ve grown to love it.

    I was so sad when Go Ara and Yoonjo left the group. Their songs, while not the best, bring a lot of good memories back when I was in 8th to 9th grade.
