SPICA: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. SPICA. Spica can really sing. I mean really really. One of my favorite live performances is their cover of “Men came down from the sky like rain” linked below, better known as “It’s Raining Men”. I swear Mamamoo used Spica and this performance as the basis for all their early work.

The song “Tonight” is corny but solid pop song. (fun random fact: I heard it once, randomly, over the air at a random Walgreens pharmacy.)

    • They really played spica in a Walgreens? In america? Tonight does fit the type of music companies play in stores though

never seen that clip before, they sound great 👍

  2. When people talk about how amazing their favorite 5th gen idols vocals are, I always think back to spica. They had two truly standout vocalists in boa and bohyung and the other three sounded great too (even the rapper could sing!). You could tell they actually liked each other too. Unfortunately I think Spica was also proof that being an successful idol requires visuals and “being good” at variety shows.

for as much as I listen to their music, though, I have to agree most of the tracks sit in the 8s for me. Some great tracks, but nothing I could truly call iconic

Imo, you don’t love me would be the closest thing to that. I listen to lonely (that production is ear candy) and I’ll be there (that chorus soars)
