Song Review: Bigbang – BiiiG

If you don’t count G-Dragon’s 2024 collaboration with bandmates Taeyang and Daesung, I haven’t written about a new Bigbang track since 2022. This makes BiiiG a pretty big deal, but also a bittersweet one. The band has now been cleaved down to three members, making this feel more like a sub-unit than a long-sought reunion. And rather than attempt to recapture past glories, BiiiG brings their sound into a new era.

I have a ton of grace for Bigbang since they were one of the key components that got me into K-pop in the first place. Their music means a lot to me and simply hearing their voices again is a thrill. However, BiiiG has given me pause. I don’t know what I expected from a Bigbang song in 2026, but this is definitely… different. The guys have opted for a herky jerky — yet strangely flat — dance sound that largely cycles around the same spoken hook. The instrumental has an interesting presence, all dulled electro jabs and shuffling percussion, but doesn’t modulate into the kind of peaks I’d hope for in a song like this.

Vocal melody is segregated to the pre-chorus, but even here the structure doesn’t feel unique or thrilling. Even more than Home Sweet Home, this comes across as a G-Dragon solo that just so happens to feature the other two members. It’s too flat and repetitive to stand as a Bigbang highlight. If I were going to their concert, BiiiG would not be the song I looked forward to hearing the most, which is too bad because a big comeback like this should feel like an event.

  1. With the resurgence in interest in K-pop for the early 2010s, Big Bang could’ve really taken the charge and release a song that follows up their big hits of that time. Image an updated Tonight (with less annoying autotune). They had a chance to further cement their legacy, but alas.

  2. i immediately recognised the sound they were going for. it’s waltzers music, extremely British brain thumping rave techno stuff they put on at the funfair while you’re trying to hold onto the spinning top and trying to not throw up your toffee apples after riding a rollercoaster. if this was any faster they’d be asking us to put a donk in it.

it’s an acquired taste for sure one that i’m not sure i like but given the state of kpop anniversary songs usually and the state of every bigbang related project since at least 2016 if we’re being real it’s kinda the best thing they could have done? this is overachieving which is better than the total lack of effort that has permeated all their recent solo efforts.

  3. I like this trend of hard techno songs, and these guys still mog so hard, bringing so much gravitas, making this simply irresistible. I guess it’s not much of a song, so I can understand you traditionalists not liking it, it’s more like a BIG flag being planted with a victory dance.

I’m not even a big GD fan and find his voice annoying much of the time, but it suits this kind of aggressive song really well. I also found it a bit odd that he dominated the song so much, but I still think they all still nailed the necessary elements to achieve a great flow. 9

  4. Yeah the song screamed so much of G-Dragon that I almost forgot this is a Big Bang song not GD solo. While I conceded that Big Bang aura of bad-assery could single-handedly hold up the sky should it fall, the song material was a bit bare-bones to me. The hook was catchy and the beat is danceable, but the song really lack the usual fanfare associated with Big Bang powerful hits. The song ending was so abrupt that I was wondering if this is really the kind of song suitable for reunion? I guess even a legendary group could not fill the hole left by other members’ absence so easily. A decent effort nevertheless.

  5. To be fair, it is kind of crazy and even impressing to see Bigbang releasing music. Even considering one of their members is a criminal and the other wants nothing to do with the group. Those factors, together with time, could perfectly make it so that we don’t hear about Bigbang ever again. But here we are, which makes me happy!

It is true that we’re currently living an early 2010s revival, and leaning into that sound would’ve been great for them and so nostalgic. However, I welcome this song with open arms, to be honest. I love the production and how unexpected it is for them. I also appreciate the effort and the attempt to make something different, especially in a context with many big groups (EXO, BLACKPINK and BTS) all releasing the worst music of their careers.

  6. To be completely honest, this track just isn’t quite for me. The beat during the chorus felt a bit grating and choppy to my ears, making it hard to fully enjoy. It feels like a momentum killer in a similar way to Bang Bang Bang but not as suicidal since there wasn’t much build. That being said, BIGBANG singles almost always feature a standout melodic pre-chorus, and that element was definitely a welcome touch.

However, this wasn’t quite what I was hoping for when anticipating a major 20th-anniversary comeback. I’m really hoping we get more music from them later this year that draws inspiration from timeless classics like “Monster,” “Haru Haru,” or “Fantastic Baby,” paying a wonderful homage to their legendary sound rather than leaning into trend-heavy styles.

  7. I went to a Kpop event where the DJ mostly played 4th/5th gen boy group songs, and this sounds like 80% of the tracks I heard there, which should be the last way you’d want to play it when people think of you as a legend.

TOP’s deep voice was a nice counterbalance to GD, so it’s a real shame he’s gone.

  8. So this happened just last night: I was dropping off sonny boy at a regular event which required going through a security booth for the parking lot. The woman recording my license plate asked me about my “SUPER-JR” license plate. Old school kpop. The man recording my driver’s license muttered his kid was into BTS but he was a Taeyang fan. BIG-BANG?!!!

Agree with all above, esp this being more like GD song that features the other two. Adding: its also missing the classic Big Bang outro one more time with feeling. Big Bang did outros so well that many have tried to imitate it without the panache that Big Bang had.
