Chungha hasn’t actively promoted a new single since early 2025. Those hoping for a new album after this long hiatus will have to wait because she’s back with a digital single instead. Chungha famously spent eight years living in Texas, and México takes us on a trip to the country just south of that.
You would be forgiven for thinking México might be some sort of tourist theme track for the country. The language-blending song sidesteps K-pop entirely, performed in both English and Spanish. This isn’t too surprising given K-pop’s massive popularity in both Central and South America, but it does make the song difficult to compare within the context of the industry. I can’t say I listen to much music from Mexico, so I’m not sure if this sound is indicative of what music is coming out of that country right now. To me, it still feels like a very safe K-pop interpretation of Latin music.
To be honest, I’m trying to think of something interesting to say about this song but coming up short. It’s perfectly nice and Chungha sounds in fine form, but the whole thing just leaves me with nothing. It’s such a hesitant sound, aiming for “sultry” but ending up as “functional.” Neither the production nor the melodies call attention to themselves, making México feel more like a means to an end than an exciting tribute to a rich musical culture.

It is certainly surprising to see Chungha kick off the month as yet another K-pop soloist releasing an entirely non-Korean single! The song itself is quite good rather than bad. However, the production remains fairly hushed throughout and never truly expands or builds in momentum. Particularly during the chorus—where one might hope for a big, loud, and dynamic arrangement featuring traditional Mexican instrumentation—she instead opts for a light-as-a-feather execution paired with a post-chorus production showcase. That said, props to her for incorporating Spanish lyrics directly into the chorus. It’s a really cool touch!

SuJu did a few other similar songs around that same time, circa 2018, for their Latin American fans. “Lo Siento” with Leslie Grace – which got some noise from the k-ELF because Leeteuk danced a little too close to her (I am not making this up). Also a cover of “Ahoras Te Puedes Marchar”, an oldie 80’s hit, with a shot-for-shot imitation of the original MV.

It makes me think of those Eurovision songs from Eastern European countries that just drop a random song in dual language but not their own. Also ChungHa has a very affected way of singing in English that’s borderline grating. Pass

ever since i got into latin pop i havent really enjoyed these kpop acts who do latin concepts because they really minimize how amazing latin music can be, even reggaeton sounds great when it comes from artists from those countries
this song is unfortunately no different, which is sad

Don’t get me wrong, Chungha is no doubt an amazing performer, but the producer really made such a boring latin-inspired tune. There is no sign of passion nor excitement in the song even though the choreography is quite energetic and excellent. Instead of making me want to dance, it bore me to death so fast.

Sounds a little bit like early KARD, or some 2014~2017 type of pop music that put too much emphasis on the beat drop.

music from Mexico is very diverse as it is in all of Latin America. This sound feels very kpop doing Latin to me. The song is kinda whatever, but chungha is still showing what a great performer she is and I appreciate her not only having the entire chorus in Spanish but a complete Spanish version. Not only is it a great business decision, but it just feels right to put that amount of effort in. Wish it happened more often
