ChRocktikal made their debut early this year as the new band project of Dreamcatcher’s Siyeon. Their album garnered passionate support from fans, especially those who loved Dreamcatcher’s rock sound. Now, the group is back with their first mini album and title track Requiem.
This is one of those end-of-summer songs that feels like it should have been released back in June. It’s not your traditional summer banger, but something about the surging guitar recalls the season. I love the celebratory riff that opens the track and punctuates each chorus. It’s easy to imagine this being performed at a university festival and getting the crowd hyped up. There are even built-in chant-along moments that give Requiem a fun call and response energy. When it comes down to it, I’m not sure the melodies are memorable enough for me to come back for more, but I appreciate the good vibes.

very generic j-rock inspired song, but that’s 99% of what I hear from idol adjacent rock, so probably what listeners gravitate too in Korea. It’s not bad, I like Siyeon voice too, but I hope they get a bit more ambitious and creative as they move forward

I think its great, great for Siyeon. She is hitting the rock band gestalt that is popular right now in Korean music (do we call this kpop or krock?) as the natural pivot from her prior role as vocal line in Dreamcatcher. It may coloring perfectly within those lines of contemporary krock, but it is done very well and authentically.

Its a bit generic alright almost OST-like but not boring in a good way. I am sure this will be a hit during festival season.
