There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.
As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.
Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

i’m assuming abracadabra is a 10 though lol. i have a question, though. besides how iconic they are, how come songs such as “i am the best” and “abracadabra” have legendary scores despite not being filled with a ton of melody and being mostly rapping/sing-talking, similar to a lot of today’s songs? thank you.

its always dependent on how these songs are executed, for instance abracadabra’s hooks are carried by its sassy beat and strong sense of rhythm, creating a satisfying earworm that managed to define their entire career
as for i am the best, when the girls sing about how amazing they are they genuinely show it through their charisma and attitude that comes from their performances, meaning we as the listeners believe they’re amazing
nick could probably word this better, but this is my main explanation of why these songs are classics compared to the slop we get today

It’s also a matter of who did it first. Not that the first to do it is always the best, but the one inventing the template is bound to be more thrilling than the one copying the template for the thousandth time.

i love bringing up azealia banks’s 212 in these conversations because it’s a huge example of how to make this sound work so well, it’s all majority rapping but the way she gets so confident when she delivers her bars makes the song the classic it is
and really if u wanna get the appeal for these u gotta listen to some more hip hop
