Heart Of Woman debuted with a refreshing take on the seemingly endless Y2K trend in K-pop, but their album was more of a mixed bag. This unpredictability continued with recent pre-release Melt, which hitched its wagon to another oft-(over)used K-pop trend: subdued “beige pop.” And if you thought the whiplash was over, be prepared to do another double take with title track Lit It.
Here, it feels like Heart Of Woman have been hanging out with ALLDAY PROJECT. The hip-hop heavy Lit It reinvents them with swagger as the number one ingredient. There are a few cool moments throughout the track — most notably during the vocal-focused pre-chorus. However, the song is dragged down by a truly awful chorus.
As with so many tracks of this nature, Lit It just kind of gives up when it reaches its centerpiece. The girls halfheartedly mutter some nonsense about fiestas and senoritas as the instrumental transitions from club beats to trap breakdowns. It’s almost a parody of this style of song, trying to hit all the marks without doing much of anything. It’s not a convincing reinvention and not a particularly pleasant listen, so I’m not sure what their agency was hoping to get out of this.
